Game Notes For West Virginia Power

SUNDAY: West Virginia earned its first win of the second half 6-5 at Greensboro. Rogelio Noris hits a third inning grand slam against Matt Montgomery to give the Power a 5-1 lead after three innings. Phillip Irwin struck out six over six frames and notched his second win of the year. Aaron Baker added a solo home run in the ninth to give the West Virginia bullpen a much needed run of insurance. Duke Welker walked three batters in the ninth and allowed a run, but earned his team-best fifth save of the year.

IN THE BRIGHT: The Power are 9-12 during day games this season, including a win yesterday afternoon. West Virginia and Greensboro will play early on this getaway Monday. The Power will not play another day game until July 11 and have ten daytime contests remaining, including two ore-noon starts.

ROLLING ON THE ROAD: David Rubinstein has reached base safely by hit or walk in his last 26 consecutive road contests, dating back to April 25 at Kannapolis. The Power All-Star has also has hit safely in each of his last 11 games and had three hitting streaks of six game or more this season.

HISTORY WITH THE ‘HOPPERS: The Power won the 2009 season series with the Grasshoppers 9-5. West Virginia won six of eight games at Appalachian Power Park and split a six-game set at Greensboro. The Power have gone 23-14 at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro since 2005, and hold a 24-13 edge at home.

LOOKING BACK TO LOOK AHEAD: During their first season as a Pirates affiliate, the Power went 27-43 during the first half of the season. The club hit .254 during the first 70 games and held a staff ERA of 4.66. West Virginia finished the ‘09 campaign with a .262 club average, a staff ERA of 4.18, and a 67-70 record for the year by going 40-27 in the second half. The 2010 edition of the Power hit .235 during the front half of the year, held a staff earned run average of 4.28, and finished 31-39.

LONG TIME GONE: Thursday's loss to Greensboro was the longest game that West Virginia has played in this season. The second half opener lasted three hours and 25 minutes, surpassing the previous marathon of Opening Night at Savannah, which lasted three hours and 16 minutes. The game was the fifth longest ninth inning game in Power history, trailing the longest nine inning contest by 21 minutes, played on August 24, 2007 at Hickory.

POWER POINTS: Power pitchers have walked 184 batters this season, second fewest in the SAL this season... Evan Chambers has walked 57 times this year to lead the South Atlantic League. Chambers ranks third across all of Minor League Baseball, trailing only Kila Ki'aihue of Omaha (68) and Conner Crumbliss of Kane County (63). West Virginia did not face Edgar Olmos during the series at Appalachian Power Park in early May...

AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh lost 3-2 at Oakland. The Pirates have lost 17 straight road games. Indianapolis pounded Toledo 15-3... Altoona beat Bowie 12-3... Bradenton walked off with a 7-6 win over Fort Myers... State College doubled up Batavia 4-2. Jhonathan Ramos earned the win.
