LHP Robbie Erlin Named SAL Pitcher of the Week
June 28, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The South Atlantic League announced on Monday that LHP Robbie Erlin has been named the SAL Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 21 - 27. He becomes the third Crawdad this season to earn an SAL Weekly Award, joining CF Miguel Velazquez (Player of the Week, May 3 - 9) and 1B Mike Ortiz (Player of the Week, April 26 - May 2).
Erlin, 19, went 1-0 in his lone start during the week, pitching six hitless innings with eight strikeouts against the Hagerstown Suns on Sunday afternoon. Erlin opened with five perfect innings, at one point striking out seven Suns in a row, before hitting Hagerstown 1B Brett Newsome to begin the bottom of the sixth inning. Newsome was the only baserunner that Erlin allowed in his six innings. Erlin previously threw five perfect frames in his first start of the season on May 18 in Kannapolis before being relieved. On the season, he is 3-1 and owns the second-best ERA in the SAL at 1.34. Last Tuesday, Erlin pitched a scoreless third inning of relief in the 2010 South Atlantic League All-Star Game in Greenville, South Carolina.
The native of Santa Cruz, California is in his first full season of professional baseball, after being selected in the third round of the 2009 June draft by the Texas Rangers out of Scotts Valley High School. In three games with the Arizona League Rangers last season, Erlin went 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA through four innings.
