Intimidators Lose Another Heartbreaking Slugfest, 13-9
June 28, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
For the second straight game runs were not at a premium and for the third straight game, the Kannapolis Intimidators allow runs in the late innings to the Augusta GreenJackets who outlast the Intimidators in the 10th by the score of 13-9. The GreenJackets won last night by the score of 17-14.
Tied at four, the game had a relatively normal scoreline as the game headed into the top of the eighth inning, but then the runs came in bunches for both teams one night after each team belted out 21 hits and a combined 31 runs. After Matt Hopps went six innings, allowing four runs, two earned, and Taylor Thompson threw a clean inning in his Intimidators debut, Orlando Santos was called on in the tie game.
In the top of the eighth, the GreenJackets (4-1) led the inning off with three straight singles and scored three runs to take a 7-4 lead. However in the bottom half of the inning, the Intimidators (1-4) had an answer and scored two back to go into the ninth inning down one at 7-6.
In the ninth, the GreenJackets tallied for another two runs on the second home run of the game by reigning SAL Hitter of the Week Ryan Cavan, Cavan hit homers in the final three games of the series, to take a 9-6 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning. Jose Valdez came on for the save in the ninth, but the Intimidators would not go down so easily. The Intimidators, who had already pulled back a three-run deficit after the first inning, saw Daniel Wagner reach on a walk, Kyle Colligan single and Ian Gac single to load the bases with one out. Down in the count, Nick Ciolli then singled, scoring two before he and Ian Gac moved to second and third on a wild pitch. On a two-strike pitch, Brady Shoemaker then hit and RBI-ground out to tie the game and with the winning run on third, Kevin Dubler grounded out to force extras.
In extras, Zach Piccola (0-3) came on in relief, likely the last bullpen arm the Intimidators had left after using everyone the past two games, and he got two outs, allowing just one single before the GreenJacket hitters went on a hitting barrage with two down. Evan Crawford hit a two-out single followed by a walk to Ryan Cavan to load the bases. Nick Liles, 0-for-5 at the time, then hit a two run single, an intentional walk put Chris Dominguez on first and Luke Anders plated two more with his fifth hit of the game in as many at-bats to take a 13-9 lead in the 10th.
In the bottom of the inning, the Intimidators got one baserunner on off Mitch Lively (4-1) who picked up the win and worked the final 1.2 innings scoreless in another crazy ballgame with the Intimidators and the GreenJackets.
Anders is just the seventh player in the SAL this season to have five hits in a game, and Dominguez had four, a triple shy of the cycle. Kyle Colligan, who missed five games with a hamstring pull had a nice return to the lineup with three hits, including a home run that tied the game at four in the sixth inning. Brian Irving went 5.1 as a starter for the GreenJackets and allowed five hits and four runs.
The Intimidators are off to another sour start, much the same as their 0-6 first half as they are 1-4. They will now play a 5-game series in Asheville, NC against the Tourists. On Tuesday at 7:05 pm, Cameron Bayne, winner of his past four decisions will take on 2009 first round pick Tyler Matzek.
