From the Notes

ABOUT YESTERDAY: The Mud Hens scored seven runs over the final three innings combined to pull away from a 2-2 deadlock and split the four-game series with the Indians yesterday in Indianapolis. The Tribe loss dropped them into second place in the IL West once again; they've sat alone in first just one day this season. Indy tallied just five hits on the afternoon but received another strong outing from Casey Sadler (6.2ip, 5h, 3r/er, 1bb, 5k) who was tagged with the tough-luck loss. Indy leveled the score at 2-2 in the sixth on sacrifice flies by Jose Osuna and Kevin Kramer, but Mike Gerber gave the visitors the lead for good with a two-out RBI single off Josh Smoker in the seventh. Smoker later beaned Christin Stewart with the bags full in the eighth to make it 4-2, and Toledo then smacked three home runs in the ninth of Montana DuRapau to cap the scoring. Tribe catcher Ryan Lavarnway recorded the final two outs for Indy, both groundouts, on just three total pitches.

SEVEN THRU NINE: The Indians were held to five hits in yesterday's loss to the Mud Hens. The bottom third on Indy's lineup -- Jerrick Suiter, Jackson Williams and Pablo Reyes -- contributed four hits and one walk in their 12 plate appearances combined, including a two-hit effort from Williams. The top six hitters in the lineup combined to bat 1-for-17 (.059) with four walks and four strikeouts.

HOMERS IN AN INNING: The Mud Hens clubbed three home runs in the ninth yesterday off Montana DuRapau, the most home runs allowed in a single inning by Indy since at least 2011. DuRapau is the first Tribe pitcher to give up at least three homers in an outing since Tyler Eppler and Drew Hutchison did so in 2017.

WOOD TO THE DL, CORRESPONDING MOVE: Eric Wood was placed on the 7-day DL today with a left hamstring strain. In a corresponding move, the Pirates promoted infielder Alfredo Reyes from Double-A Altoona. Reyes began his 2018 campaign in High-A and stole 23 bases there while hitting .310, ultimately earning him a promotion to the Curve on June 29. He batted .235 (8-for-34) with four stolen bases with the Curve and is one of 17 players in Minor League Baseball with at least 27 stolen bases this season. Tribe OF Christopher Bostick (appendectomy) also began a minor league rehab assignment with the GCL Pirates today.

PABLO IN JULY: Pablo Reyes owns a .333 average (12-for-36) and 1.018 OPS through a team-high 12 games in the month of July. He leads the team in home runs (3), RBI (8), hits and slugging (.667) so far this month, despite batting primarily out of the No. 9 spot. He homered in three straight games to start the second half against Toledo, the first time he's accomplished that feat in his career.

INDIANS VS. STRIPERS: Reyes has had the most success among Tribe players against Gwinnett this season, batting .467 (7-for-15) with one homer, three doubles and two RBI in six games. Osuna (.318, 7-for-22, four doubles, two RBI) is the only other current Indian with an average above .300 against the Stripers this season. Indy is hitting a collective .229 (50-for-218) in seven games vs. Gwinnett.

NEWMAN NOT SLOWING DOWN: Since June 13, Tribe leadoff man and IL All-Star shortstop Kevin Newman is batting .317 (33-for-104) with a .368 OBP and .801 OPS. His hit total of 33 since that date is tied for eighth most in the IL. He is tied with his double-play partner Kevin Kramer for most multi-hit games on the team (27).

J-MART IN BUSINESS: Jason Martin is batting .306 (15-for-49) with an .802 OPS through 13 Triple-A contests. He already has four multi-hit games with Indy and has hit safely in 10 of the 13 games he's played in thus far.

GO GET 10-PLUS: The Indians have gone a season-high nine straight games by having nine hits or less offensively, but they've still managed to go 6-3 during that stretch. Despite the somewhat cold stretch offensively (.243, 69-for-284) over the last nine contests, the Indians are still averaging 4.6 runs per game (41 runs). When posting single-digit hit totals, the Tribe are 24-32 this season; they're 26-9 when recording 10 or more hits.

PROTECTING THE VIC: The Indians are 29-19 at The Vic and have won 15 of their last 21 games in the Circle City. Seven of Indy's league-high 11 shutouts have come at Victory Field. Indy's 29 home wins are second most in the league behind Lehigh Valley (32).

NOTES ON JOSE: Jose Osuna is batting .335 (60-for-179) with four homers, 21 doubles, 35 RBI and a .908 OPS in 49 games for the Tribe. Since June 3 with Indy (22 games), Osuna has batted .353 (30-for-85) with eight doubles, 16 RBI and 10 runs scored. He has hit safely in 40 of his 48 starts for the Tribe this year.
