Toledo Mud Hens News Release
TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo Mud Hens dropped the first game of the current homestand to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre by a score of 5-0.
Toledo's starter Kyle Funkhouser took the loss after giving up two runs in his debut at the Triple A level. He recorded at total five strikeouts, but walked just as many. The Tigers number seven prospect provided much of the excitement from the Mud Hens side of the game, which included striking out the first two batters of the game, one of them being MLB rehabber Gary Sanchez.
The starter for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Nestor Cortes, also went six innings with a little more success. He surrendered only a single hit, while walking only a single batter. To add to his solid day, he struck out ten Toledo batters.
Funkhouser scattered the two runs he surrendered. The opening salvo was fired in the second inning when Billy McKinney drew a bases loaded walk to drive in Wilkin Castillo. That inning was escaped when Sanchez grounded into a 5-4-3 double play.
The next run came in the fourth when L.J. Mazzilli doubled home Mark Payton. The RailRiders would not score again until the seventh when Warwick Saupold surrendered a pair of runs. It was McKinney who drove in a run with a triple, then scored on a Tyler Austin groudout.
The lone hit for the Mud Hens came early on, in fact it was the first Toledo batter. Leonys Martin nailed a double to start the home half of the first. Jacob Robson also reached second by way of error in the sixth inning. However, that was it for the offense.
Sanchez brought some excitement in the late innings by homering off of Kevin Comer in the top of the ninth inning to extend the RailRider lead. The Mud Hens went down quietly in the bottom of the ninth inning.
