From the Notes
ABOUT YESTERDAY: The Indians rallied but came up short in a 2-1 loss to Durham yesterday, giving the Bulls the series win and season series head-to-head, 4-2. Casey Sadler tossed five shutout frames in a spot start for Clay Holmes who was promoted to Pittsburgh, but Brandon Waddell promptly allowed three straight hits in the sixth that gave the visitors the lead for good. Brandon Lowe, named the IL Player of the Week today, hit a solo homer in the eighth to make it 2-0, his fourth of the series. Indy plated its lone run in the home half on a Max Moroff RBI double, but Kevin Newman was thrown out on a close play at the plate to kill the threat. Jesus Liranzo struck out two over 1.1 shutout innings in relief. Moroff and Arden Pabst, making his Triple-A debut, finished with two hits apiece.
ROSTER MOVEMENT: The Indians made a flurry of moves today. Reliever Johnny Hellweg, who was second in the IL with 11 saves and had a 1.33 ERA and 1.15 WHIP, was released by Pittsburgh with the intent of playing overseas in Japan. Additionally, Arden Pabst was transferred back to High-A Bradenton with catcher Jackson Williams coming off the DL, and UTL Eric Wood (R pinky fracture) is set to begin a minor league rehab assignment with Short-Season A West Virginia tonight.
RYAN RAKING: Indy catcher Ryan Lavarnway is riding a season-high 11-game hitting streak into tonight's series opener. He owns a tremendous .914 OPS through 29 games and is batting .299 (29-for-97) with four homers, one triple, seven doubles and 15 RBI on the season. He is batting .385 (15-for-39) during his streak with all four of his home runs coming since June 3. He has reached base safely in 22 of his last 23 games.
ROAD WARRIORS: Five IL teams currently own road records at or above .500. Indy has the fifth-best road mark at 17-17. Rochester (21-14), Toledo (22-16), Durham (20-15) and Lehigh Valley (20-17) are all above .500 on the road. All four playoff spots -- as of today -- are occupied by Lehigh Valley (IL North leaders), Durham (IL South leaders), Toledo (IL West leaders) and Indianapolis (IL Wild Card leaders).
LEADING OFF: When batting leadoff and in his first at-bat of the game, Kevin Newman is batting .373 (22-for-59) with one home run, seven doubles, four walks, a .422 OBP and .972 OPS. Newman has recorded a hit in the first inning in each of the last four games; he singled on June 21 vs. Norfolk, doubled to open the first on both June 22 and 23 vs. Durham and singled again yesterday in the first.
KEVIN TO 11: Kevin Newman has hit safely in 11 straight games thanks to another hit yesterday. His career-high hitting streak is 16, set from June 21-July 9, 2016 with Double-A Altoona. During his current stretch, he's hit .356 (16-for-45) to raise his average from .297 to .307, the seventh-best mark in the IL. He is first in the IL with 42 runs scored, tied for first in stolen bases (16) and tied for second in hits (81). He has been a better hitter when behind in the count this season, owning a .347 average (34-for-98) in those situations, compared to a .258 clip (17-for-66) when ahead in the count. He has struck out in just 10.7 percent of his plate appearances this season (31 K/289 PA), the second-lowest percentage in the IL behind Syracuse's Irving Falu (6.9%).
LUPLOW SWINGING IT: Jordan Luplow had hit safely in a season-high nine straight contests before ending yesterday's game with a groundout in a pinch-hit appearance. He has still hit safely in 16 of his last 19 overall, elevating his average from .256 to .278 and OPS from .799 to .837. He is batting .452 (14-for-31) with one homer, five doubles, three RBI, six runs scored and seven walks against just four strikeouts over his last 10 games.
