Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs split a doubleheader with the Rochester Red Wings on a warm, sunny Monday afternoon at NBT Bank Stadium. Rochester took the first contest, 4-1, and Syracuse won the second game with a walk-off groundout by Moisés Sierra in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 3-2 win.
In Game One, Rochester (36-37) scored first in the top of the second inning. With LaMonte Wade at third base, Zack Granite at first, and one out, Cameron Rupp grounded out to short, but Wade scored on the play to give Rochester a 1-0 advantage.
The Red Wings added to their lead in the third. With one out, Nick Gordon singled, and Williams Astudillo was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second. Two batters later, Wade drilled a pitch over the right-field wall for a three-run home run that put Rochester up 4-0.
Syracuse (31-44) got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Bengie Gonzalez singled, Andrew Stevenson singled, and Adrian Sanchez walked to load the bases. Jacob Wilson followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Gonzalez to trim the Red Wings edge to three, 4-1.
In Game Two, Rochester scored first again. In the top of the third, Edgar Corcino led off with a double. Gregorio Petit followed with a sacrifice bunt that moved Corcino to third. Jordan Pacheco then singled to center field, scoring Corcino for a 1-0 Red Wings lead.
Syracuse tied the game in the bottom of the third. With one out, Stevenson doubled. Two batters later, Matt Reynolds singled to center field, bringing home Stevenson to knot the game, 1-1.
The Red Wings regained the lead in extra innings in the top of the eighth. As per new extra-innings rules implemented before the start of this season, a runner starts each half inning on second base. Reginatto started at second for Rochester in the eighth. Edgar Corcino flied out to right field to begin the frame. Petit was then hit by a pitch, and Pacheco singled to load the bases. With Zack Granite batting, a wild pitch allowed Reginatto to score to give Rochester a 2-1 edge.
The Chiefs won the game in the bottom of the eighth. Stevenson started the half inning at second base. Sanchez laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Stevenson over to third. Reynolds followed with a triple that scored Stevenson to tie the game, 2-2. Rochester then intentionally walked Raudy Read to put runners on first and third. Sierra followed with a ground ball to first base that Red Wings first baseman Kennys Vargas fielded. Vargas touched first base to get Sierra out but tripped and didn't make a throw to any other base, allowing Reynolds to score the game-winning run for a 3-2 Chiefs win.
Syracuse and Rochester continue their five-game, four-day series on Tuesday night with the third game. RHP Austin Voth is scheduled to start on the mound for the Chiefs while RHP Zack Littell is set to throw for the Red Wings. First pitch will be at 6:35 p.m.
