ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Bligh Madris roped a two-run double and recorded his eighth multi-hit game of June to lead the Indianapolis Indians in their first win over the Gwinnett Stripers on Friday night, 5-4. With the Indians leading 2-1 following a bases-loaded walk to Mason Martin in the second and sacrifice fly by Carter Bins in the fourth to erase a 1-0 deficit, Madris smacked his 14th double of the season for his second of three hits on the night to score two insurance runs. The Stripers took one run back on a run-scoring groundout by Kramer Robertson in the bottom of the seventh inning for his second RBI of the game. He launched a leadoff homer to give Gwinnett its early lead in the first. Carter Bins doubled home a run in the eighth to push Indy's margin to 5-2, and Austin Brice yielded two runs in the ninth before stranding the tying and winning runs on base to secure the win.
EICKHOFF EXCELS: Jerad Eickhoff (W, 4-3) came one strike away from his first quality start of the season before exiting the game in the sixth with an injury. He fanned six batters while yielding one run on five hits, two walks and one hit batter. Kramer Robertson took Eickhoff deep on his first pitch in the bottom of the first, but the right-hander settled in to earn his second win in three June outings (two starts).
BETTER TIMES AT COOLRAY FIELD: Indy's 5-4 victory last night snapped a nine-game losing streak for the Indians at Gwinnett's Coolray Field. The win was Indianapolis' first at Coolray Field since July 19, 2018, a 10-3 triumph. That 2018 road win helped Indy avoid a four-game sweep at the hands of the Stripers. The victory was also Indy's fifth overall in 24 matchups against Gwinnett since the start of the 2018 season.
ALWAYS BOUNCE BACK: Indianapolis' first win of the series at Gwinnett brought the Indians back to .500 at 31-31 on the season. The Indians have fallen one game below .500 six times this season (0-1, 1-2, 7-8, 15-16, 16-17, 30-31) and have won the very next game to climb back to .500 each time.
WE WENT TO JARED: Jared Oliva collected two hits, scored three runs and stole his eighth base of the season in 10 attempts. Oliva has hit safely in nine of 11 games in June, with his two-hit performance being his second of the month. He has also successfully stolen a base in each of his last six tries. Oliva's impact was felt last homestand against Columbus when he belted a 470-foot home run in a loss on June 8 before stealing home with two outs in the bottom of the ninth the next night to secure a 6-5 win.
LOVIN' THE LEFTIES: Indy's success against southpaws continued last night with four runs scored against Tucker Davidson, who gave up six hits and five walks in the process. The Indians are batting .270 (170-for-630) with 23 home runs against lefties, compared to a .242 mark (345-for-1423) against righties.
KEEP YOUR EYE ON BLIGH: Bligh Madris extended his on-base streak to 24 games since 5/20 with three hits and two RBI last night. It is the third-longest active streak in the league, following Jake Cave's International League-leading 35-gamer for St. Paul and a 29-game streak for Iowa's Dixon Machado. Since the beginning of his on-base streak, Madris has hit safely in 21 of 23 games with an official at-bat and is hitting .393 (33-for-84) with 16 extra-base hits (11 doubles, one triple, four homers), a .474 on-base percentage and 1.164 OPS during the 24-game streak. In 44 games with the Indians this season, Madris leads the team with a .526 slugging percentage and .919 OPS.
ON-BASE MACHINES: Madris' 24-game on-base streak is the third-longest by an Indians batter this season, following Canaan Smith-Njigba and Ji-Hwan Bae who each notched 28-game streaks. It is the first time since 2016 (Adam Frazier, 29 games; Josh Bell, 25; Max Moroff, 23) when at least three Indians have recorded streaks of 23-plus games in a single season.
BAE CAN PLAY: With seven multi-hit contests in 14 June games, Ji-Hwan Bae is hitting .322 (19-for-59) for the month. His .301 average (65-for-216) for the season is second on the team behind Madris (.309). Last night, Bae went 1-for-3 with a walk, run scored and stolen base, his 14th in 20 attempts. He is currently ranked among International League leaders in runs scored (T-2nd, 46), triples (T-5th, 4), total hits (7th), stolen bases (T-9th, 14) and total bases (10th, 103) this season.
TONIGHT: The Indians and Stripers meet for a fifth time in their six-game set at Coolray Field at 7:05 PM ET. Since 2009, when the franchise moved from Richmond to Gwinnett, the Indians are 46-54 with a 22-34 record on the road against Gwinnett. Right-hander Cody Bolton gets the nod tonight for Indy against Stripers righty Huascar Ynoa.
STEALING SPLITS: The Indians rank fifth among all Triple-A teams and third in the International League with 75 stolen bases this season, which has surpassed their total from both 2021 (71) and 2019 (69). They are 46-for-58 in stolen base attempts in 29 games at Victory Field and 29-for-38 in 33 road games. The Indians have led the International League in stolen bases as a team five times in the Victory Field era (1996, 2011-12, 2015-16).
MLB DEBUT, HOW 'BOUT THAT VIEAUX: Yesterday, the Pittsburgh Pirates selected left-handed reliever Cam Vieaux, and he made his MLB debut against San Francisco at PNC Park. He entered in the fifth inning with one runner on and one out and pitched around a single by Mike Yastrzemski by striking out Evan Longoria. He remained in the game for the sixth and fanned both Joc Pederson and Thairo Estrada in a 1-2-3 inning. A sixth-round pick of Pittsburgh in 2016 out of Michigan State, Vieaux excelled in 18 appearances (one start) with Indy this year, going 3-0 with a 2.28 ERA (7er/27.2ip), 23 strikeouts, 0.90 WHIP and .147 average against (14-for-95). His .148 average against in relief appearances alone led all International League relievers with at least 20.0 innings pitched when he was promoted.
THIS DATE IN 1963: On Father's Day in Denver, the Indians split a doubleheader, winning Game 1 by an 11-3 score before losing the nightcap, 22-5. Joe Gaines led the offense with three hits in the opener, which included an eight-run eighth for Indy. Gaines' hot hitting continued in Game 2 with a four-hit performance despite the lopsided outcome.
