Worcester Red Sox News Release
WORCESTER, M.A. - The Worcester Red Sox (31-34) put the game-tying and game-winning runs in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth, but the Toledo Mud Hens (34-29) held on for a 2-1 win at Polar Park on Saturday afternoon. The loss hands the WooSox their first four-game losing streak in the month of June.
Worcester trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the final frame and loaded the bases on a Jaylin Davis walk, a Jeter Downs double and after a popout, an intentional walk to Yolmer Sanchez. Toledo reliever Derek Law struck out Devlin Granberg for the second out, setting up a game-deciding at-bat for Connor Wong. Law and Wong battled to a 2-2 count before the right-hander delivered a fastball by the bat of Wong, a game-ending strikeout to preserve a Mud Hens victory.
On the mound, the WooSox had a scheduled bullpen day and received strong outings from all five arms.
Taylor Cole got the start and tossed two scoreless innings, stranding runners in scoring position in both frames. Michael Feliz was next, and he added three scoreless frames, allowing a single hit and striking out three.
Silvino Bracho added a runless sixth before allowing the only two runs of the day in the seventh: a slow rolling ground ball single by Derek Hill and an Akil Baddoo RBI triple to right-center. Philips Valdez followed Bracho with a scoreless eighth for the second straight day, and Kaleb Ort faced the minimum in the ninth thanks to a caught stealing.
Offensively, Worcester got its only tally of the day in the fourth on a sac-fly by Christin Stewart, a run set up by a Ryan Fitzgerald opposite-field double. The WooSox were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left 10 on base.
The WooSox conclude the series against the Toledo Mud Hens, affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. On the mound, Connor Seabold (4-1, 2.01) faces Garrett Hill (1-2, 6.08). Radio coverage is live at 12:45 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network, while television coverage is on NESN+.
