LAST TIME OUT

MOOSIC, PA (June 17, 2022) - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders were defeated by the Rochester Red Wings 7-6 on Friday evening. Estevan Florial went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases and extended his team-high hitting streak to 10 games.

The Red Wings opened the scoring in the game's first frame on an RBI double from Adrian Sanchez against RailRiders' starter Ken Waldichuk. The 24-year-old lefty Waldichuk gave up five runs (four earned) over 3.2 frames. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre answered quickly versus Red Wings' starter Jefry Rodriguez via Greg Bird's game-tying single in the first. Bird went 2-for-4 with that RBI. The RailRiders then took the lead in the third with a run-scoring hit from Miguel Andújar to make it 2-1. Rodriguez allowed two runs in 2.2 innings. Rochester jumped in front with a four-run fourth. Andrew Stevenson doubled home one and Sanchez drove in his second run of the night. The Red Wings added to their advantage two innings later after another RBI single from Sanchez made it 6-2.

SWB cut the lead in half with two tallies in the seventh. Phillip Evans brought Florial in on a ground out and Derek Dietrich delivered a two-out, RBI single to bring the RailRiders within 6-4. Rochester added an insurance run in the ninth on Stevenson's fifth home run of the season. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre then put together a rally in the ninth. Derek Dietrich and Max McDowell each brought runners home with two outs to bring the RailRiders within one, but they couldn't score the tying run in the 7-6 final.

NEWS & NOTES

FIRST THINGS FIRST - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders welcome in the Rochester Red Wings for the only time this season for a six-game series from June 14 to June 19. These two teams have met six times prior in New York, with the Red Wings winning five of six. Rochester finds themselves back in first place by half a game entering Saturday.

KEEP ON SCORING - Entering Saturday, the RailRiders have scored six or more runs in six of their last nine games. During those nine games, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has gone 6-3.

KROOK LINE AND SINKER - Matt Krook takes the hill tonight for the RailRiders. He has faced the Red Wings once this season, allowing eight hits in 19 at bats (.421) in a May 6 loss. After touting a 1.96 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in April, May featured a 6.65 ERA and 1.96 WHIP with June currently at 11.88 and 1.92. Krook is set to make his 13th appearance of the season and his 11th start.

OUR FAVORITE CHRIS - The Yankees have signed infielder Chris Owings to a Minor League contract and have assigned him to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Owings was last with the Baltimore Orioles, playing in 27 games in the Majors this season. He has also been in the Colorado Rockies, Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Royals systems. He was placed on unconditional release waivers on June 12 by the Orioles. Despite hitting .107 with Baltimore this year, Owings slashed .326/.420/.628 in 21 games with the Rockies in 2021.

HE WILL, HE WILL ROC YOU - Armando Alvarez launched a three-run home run on Wednesday against Rochester starter Logan Verrett, his fifth homer of the year. In his three seasons with the RailRiders, Alvarez is slashing .305/.341/.619 (.960 OPS) with eight home runs and 24 RBI against the Red Wings. These are easily his best numbers against any Triple-A opponent with this much playing time. Of his 167 career hits in Triple-A, 36 of them have come against the Red Wings (22%).

HEY OLD FRIEND - According to Conor Foley, RailRiders beat writer for the Times-Tribune: "Oswaldo Cabrera (shoulder) is progressing through his rehab in Tampa, and it sounds like things are going well. He's swinging a bat." Cabrera played 22 games with the RailRiders, batting .186 before being shut down with shoulder issues that eventually got him shipped out to Tampa. He has not appeared in a game since May 8 and was placed on the injured list on May 16.

SWIPER YES SWIPING - Estevan Florial stole three bases on Friday. It was the second time this season he had completed the feat. The last time he had done it was on May 6 where he stole three bases against Rochester at Frontier Field. The catcher behind the plate for both of those games was Tres Barerra.

ES BEEN GREAT - Estevan Florial finds himself on a ten-game hitting streak (15-for-42, .357) entering Saturday, the longest hitting streak for any RailRider this season. Prior to this stretch, Florial's longest hit streak in his Scranton/Wilkes-Barre career lasted nine games from June 24 to July 4, 2021 where he went 13-for-37 (.351). The longest hitting streak of his career is eleven from July 30 to August 12, 2017 while with the Charleston RiverDogs (15-for-45, .333).
