YESTERDAY: The Tribe were swept for the first time this season in Thursday's 6-2 series finale loss against Gwinnett. The Stripers were outhit 10-9, but bullpen performances proved to be the true test for Indy. The Tribe inched within one run after facing a 3-0 deficit in the third inning off back-to-back home runs hit by Austin Riley and Adam Duvall. The Tribe scored their first run on an Alfredo Reyes RBI single in the fourth and made it a 3-2 ballgame on Nick Franklin's first home run with the Pirates organization in the sixth. Gwinnett added two runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth to seal the win and sweep. Eduardo Vera got the start for the Tribe, going 4.0 innings and allowing three earned runs on six hits. Montana DuRapau came in and tossed a season-high 2.0 innings pitched and went scoreless, keeping the potential comeback alive. The Indians couldn't get over the hump, however, after four walks in the seventh inning by Clay Holmes led to two runs. For the Stripers, their bullpen went 3.2 scoreless innings and held the Tribe to only three hits.
TODAY: The Indians continue their road trip in Charlotte tonight to being a three-game set. So far this season, the Tribe have dominated the Knights by outhitting them 47-27 with a .331 average in four games earlier this month, a series in which the Indians won three games. RHP Donny Roach is on the mound for Charlotte tonight and is its only starter Indy hasn't seen yet this season. In his four starts this season he is 0-2 with a 9.50 ERA and allowed five runs (one earned) on seven hits over 5.0 innings in his most recent start against Norfolk on April 20. The Tribe have faced Roach three times in his career, and he's 1-1 with a 4.58 ERA (9er/17.2ip) against Indy. Those starts came with Louisville in 2015, Toledo in 2016 and Charlotte last year.
STRIPERS SWEEP: The Tribe are 0-3 so far this road trip after being swept by the Stripers for a second time in as many seasons. In 2018, Gwinnett took a three-game set at Victory Field after outscoring Indy, 17-6. The teams tied with 27 hits, but the Tribe were outscored 18-10 after leaving 25 men on base. Last season, the Indians were only swept in four different series, the last coming in August at home vs. Pawtucket.
FRANKLIN FINDS IT: After going 0-for-16 in Bradenton to begin the regular season, Nick Franklin has provided a spark for the Indians offense. He is hitting .500 (3-for-6) through three games, including a 2-for-2 campaign yesterday with a home run and two walks. His long ball brought the Indians within one run of the Stripers in the sixth inning and was the 102nd home run of his professional career.
A. REYES RETURNS: Alfredo Reyes went 2-for-4 yesterday at Gwinnett and drove in one of Indy's two runs in the contest. Since returning to the Indianapolis roster on April 20, he is hitting .600 (3-for-5) and has driven in two runs, each of which have started a potential rally for the Tribe by bringing them within one run of a tie.
DOUBLE PLAY DOUBTS: The Tribe offense hit into a season-high three double plays yesterday, two of which came in the eighth and ninth innings with runners on base. The Tribe had runners on first and second with one out in both of the final two innings while down by four, but were forced out to end each potential rally.
MONTANA'S MOMENT: RHP Montana DuRapau tossed a season-high 2.0 innings last night while matching a season high with three punchouts, keeping the Tribe within striking distance against the Stripers. He has 11 punchouts in 9.1 innings pitched spanning eight appearances this season and opponents are hitting a meager .103 (3-for-29) against him.
NOT AN AVERAGE MONTH: With six games remaining this month, Jake Elmore (.403) is attempting to become just the fourth Tribe player since 2005 to post an average of .400 or greater (min. 75 ABs) in a single month. Brock Holt hit .432 in August 2012, Matt Hague hit .402 in June 2011 and Gregory Polanco batted .400 in April 2014. Elmore leads the club with nine multi-hit performances, although the Indians have gone just 4-5 when he collects two or more hits in a game.
