Game Day Preview: KGN vs MISS
November 3, 2021 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Kingston Frontenacs News Release
The Kingston Frontenacs will look to exact a little revenge on the Mississauga Steelheads at the Leon's Centre tonight. It marks the first game between the Conference rivals since a 7-2 Steelheads win over the Kingston Frontenacs on October 9.
Kingston found themselves down 3-0 after the opening period and then 5-0, under a minute into the middle frame in the first matchup against Mississauga. Chasing a five-goal deficit is never a good strategy. Still, head coach Luca Caputi's group showed resilience, never quitting, and outshooting the visitors 28 to 15 to close out the game, with Francesco Arcuri and Maddox Callens scoring third-period goals during the loss. Rookie Aidan Spooner relieved starter Leevi Meriläinen, recording 11 saves during his first 39 minutes of OHL action.
The Frontenacs are one of two teams (North Bay Battalion) averaging 4.00 team-goals per game in the Eastern Conference. Facing a Steelhead team averaging the least amount of goals in the Conference should have the black-and-gold confident in a win, but the 7-2 loss to those same Steelheads the last time the two played proves no game to be taken lightly. Kingston has gone 4-1-1-0 since October 9.
Going Fishing
The Central Division Steelheads come into Wednesday's tussle versus Kingston coming off two extra-time games last weekend. After a 3-2 overtime loss to Barrie Colts on Friday, Mississauga earned the extra point in a 3-2 shootout win over the Bulldogs in Hamilton on Saturday. Zander Veccia scored in the third, tying the game on one of 40 shots fired on Hamilton's goal.
Polished Chrome
Forward Martin Chromiak had a three-goal, four-point performance in the Frontenacs last game versus the Ottawa 67's on October 30, including the OHL Play of the Night on a lacrosse-style goal for the game-winner in the 4-3 victory at TD Place. The Slovakian native sits tied with Jordan Frasca for second in Kingston, scoring 11 points on five goals and now has five career three-plus point games in 36 career OHL games.
Streaky
Veteran Jordan Frasca now has points in five consecutive games (2G,4A) after collecting an assist on Shane Wright's goal during last Saturday's win over the 67's. Rookie winger Matthew Soto extended a personal point-streak to five games (2G,6A) with a pair of assists versus Ottawa during the win on October 30. The 1st-round pick at the 2021 OHL Priority Selection started the streak during the 5-4 win over Sudbury Wolves on October 15, scoring his first OHL goal with the game-winner. The Oakville, Ontario native leads all Kingston rookies with the eight points.
Isn't That Special
Kingston has done an excellent job of playing disciplined hockey, keeping opposition power plays to a minimum. The team has combined for 81 minutes in penalties, tied for second least in the OHL, going shorthanded an average of 3.2 times a game. The five power play goals against ties for the least amongst Eastern Conference teams (Hamilton Bulldogs).
With the 2nd best power play in the Eastern Conference operating at 24.4%, the Frontenacs must maintain their ability to win special teams battles versus a Mississauga squad that has gone shorthanded almost five times a game on average (4.75)
Leevi-headed
Goaltender Leevi Meriläinen has been impressive since being relieved in the 7-2 loss versus the Steelheads on October 9. Since giving up five goals before being relieved in that loss, the Finnish Import Selection has given up just 12 goals in five starts and has moved into 5th-overall in OHL goals-against-average (2.83). His four wins place him tied for fifth amongst OHL netminders.
Over The Boards
Team captain, Shane Wright will receive his U-18 World Championship ring from Hockey Canada. This past summer, Wright captained Canada's National squad in Texas, USA, culminating in a two-goal performance during the 5-3 win over Russia in the final.
Former Frontenacs veteran Evan Brand (145 games during 2017-2020) makes his second return to the Limestone City since being traded to Mississauga in the 2021 off-season. The 6-foot-6, 205 pound, bruising defenceman only played four seconds of the first game in Kingston due to a major/game misconduct penalty called after a hit on Kingston's Francesco Arcuri off the opening draw.
Mississauga and Kingston combined for 24 penalty minutes on October 30, tied for the most in a game so far early in the 2020/21 season.
