North Bay Battalion News Release
NORTH BAY, Ont. - Coach Ryan Oulahen of the North Bay Battalion can find positives in the Ontario Hockey League club's ongoing road dates.
"Generally, it's a great time for the kids to bond, spend a lot of time together," Oulahen said Wednesday of a three-game eastern swing that opens at 7:05 p.m. Thursday against the Peterborough Petes.
"It's nice that it's at this time of the year, where we can implement some team-building, some team meals. All that kind of stuff is what you work towards, to build the gel and to build your team chemistry and the camaraderie as a group."
The Battalion, with a won-lost-extended record of 6-5-0 for 12 points atop the Central Division, continues the trip, which makes up half of a season-high run of six consecutive away dates, by facing the Kingston Frontenacs on Friday night and the Ottawa 67's on Sunday.
"Those three in particular at this point in time are playing really, really good hockey and, also to note, all three of them are real good teams at home," said Oulahen. "They have kind of unique, interesting buildings that they play in, and we're going to have to be ready for that."
The Petes, 4-5-0 for eight points, fifth and last in the East Division, have won their last two games, 4-3 over the visiting Hamilton Bulldogs last Thursday night and 5-4 Saturday night over the host Niagara IceDogs.
"They've been good, and what I would say is they're extremely well coached; they're very, very structured," noted Oulahen. "Like I said, they know how to play in their arena. It's a unique building that we're going to have to get used to real quick."
The Peterborough Memorial Centre is renowned, if not notorious, throughout the league for its idiosyncratic dimensions.
"They don't have perfectly rounded boards. They're not quite square, but almost, so rimming pucks will come out right to the middle of the zone, something our goalies and defencemen are really going to have to be aware of, and it's a little bit smaller ice surface."
Centre Tucker Robertson paces Peterborough with six goals and 10 assists for 16 points in nine games, while left winger Emmett Sproule has five goals and eight assists for 13 points in nine games. Centre J.R. Avon has produced four goals and as many assists for eight points in nine games.
Right winger Brandon Coe leads the Battalion with six goals and 10 assists for 16 points in 11 games, and left winger Matvey Petrov has eight goals and five assists for 13 points in 11 games. Centre Kyle Jackson has scored three goals and earned a team-leading 10 assists for 13 points in 11 games, while right winger Mitchell Russell has eight goals and four assists for 12 points in eight games.
While Petrov scored three goals in an 8-3 road victory over the Barrie Colts last Saturday night, no one has been hotter than rookie Dalyn Wakely, who has played right wing in the last four games and has scored four goals in the last three, including two at Barrie and the lone North Bay marker in a 3-1 loss Sunday to the host Sudbury Wolves.
Wakely, a second-round pick in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection, has five goals and two assists for seven points in 11 games.
The Battalion already has had one overnight trip this season, having split a pair of games Oct. 22-23 against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
The game at Peterborough can be seen live in North Bay on YourTV Channels 12 and 700.
