Gallegos signs with the Chicago White Sox
June 1, 2016 - Frontier League (FL)
Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio - Lake Erie Crushers right-hander Fernando Gallegos has had a terrific 2016 season, and on Wednesday morning, his contract was purchased by the Chicago White Sox.
Gallegos, a 23-year old right-handed pitcher from Sylmar, Calif., has produced the best numbers of any Crusher pitcher this season, posting a 2-1 record with a save, and a robust, 0.36 ERA over six appearances, including four starts.
Over his last two starts, Gallegos tossed 14 innings, and allowed two runs, only one earned on 10 hits with 11 strikeouts and only a pair of free passes. On the year, he allowed only three runs, one earned on 14 hits over 25 innings of work with 21 strikeouts to only two walks. In addition, opposing batters were hitting just .163 against him.
Those remarkable numbers were enough to catch the attention of the Chicago White Sox, who signed him on Wednesday morning. It is expected that he will be assigned to a minor league affiliate later this week.
What's more impressive is that in signing with the White Sox, Gallegos becomes just the second player in the Frontier League to sign with a Major League Baseball franchise since opening day.
The 2016 was Gallegos's first in professional baseball, after finishing his collegiate career as a two-way player at Cal-State Dominguez Hills. In his two years with the Toros, he hit .345 over 79 games, and on the mound, he went 5-6 with a save, and a 5.40 ERA over 24 appearances, including six starts.
The Crushers will honor Gallegos prior to 1st pitch tonight, as they continue their three-game series with the Gateway Grizzlies at All Pro Freight Stadium. Right-hander Jordan Kraus (0-0, 0.00) will start for the Crushers and the Grizzlies will go with right-hander Will Landsheft (1-1, 4.24). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
The Lake Erie Crushers, the 2009 Frontier League Champions, and 2011 Frontier League Organization of the year, play ball at All Pro Freight Stadium, a 5,000 capacity stadium located in Avon, Ohio. The Frontier League is an independent baseball league with 12 teams operating throughout the Midwest.
