Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners rallied from 4-0 down to knot the score at 4-4, but a seven-run seventh inning by the Windy City ThunderBolts put the game out of reach in an eventual 13-4 defeat at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series.
The ThunderBolts got to Rick Teasley in the second inning with four straight two-out hits to plate three runs, and did it again on back-to-back doubles in the third for a 4-0 lead heading to the fourth inning. But the Miners would rally back in the next two frames off of Windy City lefty starter Chris Chigas. After Craig Massey reached on an infield hit and Alex De Leon walked, Aaron Gates also reached on a hit to load the bases.
With two outs in the frame, captain Steve Marino launched a line drive over the right fielder's head to clear the bases and make the score 4-3 ThunderBolts. The next inning, Toby DeMello hit a fly ball into center field that was lost in the lights and eventually became a double. After walks by Massey and Francisco Rosario loaded the bases, Nolan Earley hit a sacrifice fly to left to tie the game at 4-4.
Both teams traded zeroes until the bottom of the seventh, when a walk and two singles allowed by Teasley (1-1) broke the tie and made it 5-4. The first-place ThunderBolts would end up continuing the rally against Andrew Potter and eventually plated seven runs in the inning to take an 11-4 lead. Two more runs in the eighth against Kevin Walsh accounted for the final margin.
The Miners will look to bounce back on Wednesday night in the second game of the series at 7:05 p.m. Dyllon Nuernberg will make the start for Southern Illinois against his former team, opposed by Windy City left-hander Brady Muller.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
