Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners came back from an early 1-0 deficit with a three-run fourth inning and held that lead thanks to brilliant starting pitching by Dyllon Nuernberg. But the bullpen failed to hold in the eighth inning, as the Windy City ThunderBolts stormed back to take the lead, and the game, by a score of 5-3, sending the Miners to their fifth loss in their last six games.
The ThunderBolts struck first with an unearned run off Nuernberg on a two-out RBI single by Johnny Eierman in the bottom of the second. The game remained 1-0 until the Windy City defense faltered in the fourth inning. Nolan Earley and Alex De Leon led off with back-to-back singles, and Aaron Gates hit a grounder to second baseman Tim Zier, whose throw to the second base bag for a force-out was low, allowing Earley to score to knot the game at 1-1. Steve Marino then hit a line drive into center field to score De Leon, with Gates coming home all the way from first when the ball was mishandled by Eierman. It was ruled an RBI double to make it 3-1 Southern Illinois.
Nuernberg took the newfound lead and ran with it in his first start against his former team, dazzling by scattering just three singles allowed over seven innings of work, permitting just the lone unearned run and no walks while setting a new season-high with six punchouts in holding the first-place ThunderBolts off the scoreboard.
But in the eighth, the Miners' bullpen woes continued. Isaac Gil allowed back-to-back singles before a fielder's choice for the first out. With men at the corners, Jake Cose was called upon, and after hitting Zier with a pitch to load the bases, Blair Beck cleared them with a triple, scoring three to make it 4-3 Windy City. An RBI hit by Reggie Lawson followed for what would become the final margin. Southern Illinois got the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but a strikeout by Craig Massey and a groundout by Julius Gaines ended the contest.
Marino led the way with two hits and the lone RBI for the Miners, who fell to the .500 mark at 8-8 on the season. They will look to avoid a sweep at the hands of Windy City on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m., with Jarett Miller taking the hill against Clay Chapman.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
