Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Kole Gable helped himself to a couple of goals and Aaron Irving had a goal and two assists Wednesday night as the Edmonton Oil Kings cruised to a 5-1 win over the Portland Winterhawks.

The Fort McMurray native had four goals coming into this season in 50 games and added to that total along with five shots on net earning himself the game's first star.

"I thought it was a very good start to finish performance from our guys," said Head Coach Steve Hamilton. "We don't have a whole thick textbook on these guys in the last couple years, but obviously they are a dangerous team and I thought we did a good job to limit their offensive game."

Irving opened the scoring 5:42 in on the powerplay when he ripped a point shot that got through a crowd and behind Portland's goaltender, Adin Hill. After the Winterhawks answered back, another rookie, Jordan Dawson, scored the eventual game-winning goal late in the first with yet another point shot through a screen.

Not to be left out in the fun, Colton Kehler joined in the rookie scoring when he tucked home his 14th of the season. Gable then had the final two goals for Edmonton and came oh so close to his third, which would have been a natural hat trick. However, Gable was more focused on the solid effort his team had.

"We had a good start," said Gable. "We kept the foot on the gas and when you start like that and get a couple goals in the first period you can get a good game off of that."

Luke Bertolucci had two assists in the game and Brandon Baddock's assist on the opening goal was his 100th career WHL point. Patrick Dea got the nod and delivered with 28 saves for his 16th win this year.

The Oil Kings pack up for the road where they will travel to Cranbrook for a game vs Kootenay Friday (7pm) and then across the Crowsnest to Lethbridge for date against the Hurricanes Saturday (7pm).
