Game Story
A wild start saw the Pats jump out to a 3-0 lead on their first four shots of the game. Lane Zablocki opened the scoring just 29 seconds into the game. Sam Steel followed him just under seven minutes later on a nice setup from Cole Sanford. 20 seconds later, Steel returned the favour giving Sanford room to tally. Tyler Wong stopped the run for Lethbridge at the 8:41 mark on a scramble in front. Sanford responded with his second of the period just across the midway point, the Pats' fourth goal on five shots. Rykr Cole made it a 5-1 game when he tapped in a gift of a feed from Jake Leschyshyn on the powerplay. The Hurricanes didn't go quietly into the break as Ryley Lindgren and Brady Reagan scored in the final minute of the period to cut the Pats lead to 5-3 heading to the first intermission.
After the run and gun first period it took over 13 minutes to get a goal in the second. Former Pats forward Colton Kroeker's centering feed redirected in off a Pats defender, the second goal the 'Canes scored in that fashion on the evening. Austin Wagner got it back two minutes later when he blocked a pass, then raced ahead of the defenders before beating Sittler on a great move to the forehand. Wong cut the lead back to one when he got the puck in the slot and fired a shot to the back of the goal to send the teams to the break with the Pats ahead 6-5.
The insanity continued into the third period as the Hurricanes tied the game eight minutes into the period. After a pair of Pats got tied up on the powerplay, Tyler Wong raced in alone on the breakaway and was stopped by Brown. Following up on the play was Brayden Burke who knocked the rebound in. The Pats got it back 41 seconds later when Zablocki lifted a backhander up over Sittler to restore the lead. At the 10:43 mark, Kroeker struck again against his former team to tie the game. The former Pat continued his career night when he gave the Hurricanes their first lead of the night a few minutes later. The Blue and White had a tying marker in them as, not to be outdone, Lane Zablocki struck to complete his hat-trick and send the game to overtime. The extra frame saw the Pats put seven shots on goal, hit two posts and surrender one of their own, but nobody could find a winner. Into the shootout, Adam Brooks and Tyler Wong traded goals in the initial set. Tyler Brown shut things down in the Pats net and Austin Wagner supplied the 9-8 winner.
