Amarillo Gorillas News Release

Amarillo, TX 3/10/09 - A solid, productive season for Amarillo Gorillas' defenseman Sam Ftorek has parlayed itself into league honors, the team announced Tuesday.

Monday evening, Ftorek was announced as a finalist for the Central Hockey League's Most Outstanding Defenseman award. The New Hampshire native will battle Colorado's Aaron Schneekloth, Texas' Kevin McLeod, Odessa's Russ Moyer, and Bossier-Shreveport's Dale Lupul for the title. Ftorek has amassed 56 points in 57 games this season, and leads all CHL defensemen in points and assists (39).

The winner of the Most Outstanding Defenseman award will be announced at the conclusion of the season, with team media departments and head coaches submitting the votes.

On Tuesday morning, Ftorek was named in the CHL's "Best of the Best" poll for 2008-09. The "Best of the Best" poll is compiled from ballots cast by the Central Hockey League's players, coaches, and media departments-46 different categories are included in the poll, ranging from on-ice attributes to off-ice categories like "Best Arena Music".

Ftorek ranked third in the "Hardest Shot" category, just behind New Mexico's Aaron MacInnis and Colorado's Greg Pankiewicz. The veteran blueliner tallied 23 points in the category, with three first place votes; MacInnis won the category with 25 points.
