Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Oklahoma City, Okla. - The Fresno Grizzlies (65-60) used some early offense and tremendous pitching to beat the Oklahoma City RedHawks (65-60) 5-1 in front of 5,923 on Thursday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
Fresno got off to a hot start, scoring two runs in the top of the first off RedHawks starter Rudy Owens. Owens got the first two outs of the inning quickly, but he gave up a double and then hit a batter before Todd Linden connected on a double off the right field wall to give the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead.
Owens (0-2) pitched well going into the sixth inning, but then ran into some trouble. With two outs, a walk, a single and a fielder's choice loaded the bases. Brian Sanches replaced Owens and was able to get Xavier Nady to ground out to second to end the inning.
Owens finished 5.2 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two.
Fresno starter Jason Stevenson (5-6) didn't give up much all night. Stevenson allowed only two RedHawks to reach base and he retired the last seven men he faced. Stevenson completed five innings, giving up no runs on two hits while striking out two.
Mitch Lively relieved Stevenson and retired the first five men he faced before giving up a two-out walk and single in the bottom of the seventh. Lively was able to work out of the jam by striking out Brad Snyder.
Fresno reliever Steve Edlefsen struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth before the Grizzlies added three more runs in the top of the ninth. Oklahoma City reliever Garrett Mock walked in a run and then gave up a two-run single to Brett Pill as Fresno increased its lead to 5-0.
The RedHawks scored a run on a passed ball in the bottom of the ninth before falling 5-1.
The RedHawks finish a four-game series with Fresno on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. on another Fireworks Friday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Along with fireworks, the RedHawks will be giving away a bobblehead of team mascot Ruby to the first 2,000 fans.
The RedHawks and INTEGRIS Health will continue the "Home Run for Life" series celebrating local student, Boston Tracy. For tickets, visit the box office on Mickey Mantle Drive, call (405) 218-1000, or order online through okcredhawks.com.
