Elih Villanueva limited the Sacramento River Cats to two hits over seven scoreless innings, and the New Orleans Zephyrs won their fifth consecutive game, 3-0 on Wednesday night at Zephyr Field.

Evan Reed worked the final two innings to preserve the Zephyrs' Pacific Coast League-leading 11th shutout, and keep the Z's three games behind first-place Albuquerque in the division race.

Villauneva (9-7) pitched a season-high seven innings, and did not allow a hit until Kila Ka'aihue's two-out double in the fourth, which snapped a streak of nine consecutive batters retired.

The Z's took a 2-0 lead in second against Sacramento starter Brett Anderson, who was making a rehab start from the Oakland Athletics. Shawn Bowman led off with a single and advanced to third on a double to right by Jeff Dominguez.

Bowman scored on a single up the middle by Chase Lambin, and Jose Duarte followed with a single to plate Dominguez.

Luke Montz added his 27th home run of the year in the third, extending the Zephyrs' lead to 3-0.

Sacramento's only serious threat against Villanueva came in the sixth, when Collin Cowgill doubled and Daric Barton walked, but Ka'aihue bounced out to first, ending the inning.

Reed retired six of seven batters, including three strkeouts, to earn his first save of the season.

Anderson (1-1) took the loss for Sacramento. He struck out seven, and gave up three runs on eight hits over five innings.

The Zephyrs will continue the series at 7 pm on Thursday at Zephyr Field. Right-hander Tom Koehler will be on the bump for New Orleans, facing righty Brad Peacock for the River Cats.
