Iowa Cubs News Release

Tucson, AZ - LHP Horacio Ramirez signed a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs today and was assigned to Iowa. The Iowa Cubs also placed RHP Jaye Chapman on the disabled list with a right elbow strain retroactive to August 14.

Ramirez began the season playing independent ball with the Lancaster Barnstormers of the Atlantic League. He posted a 2-0 record with a 1.96 ERA (8 ER/36.2 IP) in 12 games (six starts). The southpaw was originally drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the fifth round of the 1997 First-Year Player Draft.

The 6-foot-1 hurler spent eight seasons in the majors with five different clubs, making his major league debut with Atlanta in 2003 as a starter. Ramirez moved to the Seattle Mariners in the 2006 trade that sent RHP Rafael Soriano to the Braves. He made his last major league appearances in the American League with stints on Kansas City, Chicago, and most recently Los Angeles in 2011. The California native holds a career 40-35 record with a 4.65 ERA (356 ER/688.1 IP) and 318 strikeouts.

Chapman joined Iowa August 1 after he was acquired by the Chicago Cubs along with RHP Arodys Vizcaino from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for LHP Paul Maholm and OF Reed Johnson. The 25-year-old was 3-6 with seven saves and a 3.52 ERA (21 ER/53.2 IP) in 40 relief appearances with Triple-A Gwinnett this year. In six appearances with the I-Cubs, Chapman holds an 0-2 record with a 9.82 ERA (8 ER/7.1 IP) with six strikeouts and six walks.

The Iowa Cubs play game three of a four-game series against the Tucson Padres at Kino Stadium tonight. The game starts at 9:05 p.m. central time and will be broadcast live on AM 940 beginning with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show at 8:45 p.m.
