Iowa Cubs News Release
Tucson, AZ - Three Iowa pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout in the Cubs (47-78) 4-0 win over the Tucson Padres (46-78) at Kino Stadium tonight. The Cubs have won the first two games of this series and have won consecutive games for the first time since a four-game winning streak, July 6-12. This was the Cubs' sixth shutout win of the season.
Chris Rusin (8-8) allowed four hits, walked three, and struck out four in six innings to earn the win in his team-leading 10th quality start of the season. Tonight was Rusin's fifth start of the season of at least six innings pitched and no runs allowed. This was also his first victory in six starts going back to July 15 at Omaha. Blake Parker pitched two perfect innings and struck out three in his fourth appearance as part of his Major League rehab assignment. This was his longest outing since returning to action after a stress reaction in his right elbow. Esmailin Caridad finished the bottom of the ninth and allowed a walk and struck out one.
The Cubs got on the board with an unearned run against Padres' starter Matt Palmer in the second inning. With one out, Blake Lalli reached on an error, went to third on a double by Jeff Frazier, and scored on a groundout by Brian Esposito. Palmer (6-9) would come out of the game with a man on, and one out, in the top of the third inning. Josh Spence would come in and strand a runner while finishing off the frame. While Palmer came out of the game, the Cubs lost OF Tony Campana and manager Dave Bialas to ejection in the inning. Diory Hernandez, who wasn't in the game, was also ejected in the middle of the third.
The Cubs tacked on their final three runs against Spence in the top of the fifth. Matt Tolbert and Rusin opened the inning with singles and Nate Samson, who replaced Campana in the leadoff spot, drove in Tolbert with a base hit of his own. Alfredo Amezaga followed with an RBI single to extend the Cubs' lead to 3-0. Dave Sappelt reached on error to load the bases, but Greg Rohan hit into a double play as Samson scored the final run of the inning.
The Cubs and Padres continue this series tomorrow night at 9:05 Central time. RH Seth McClung (2-13, 6.60) will start for the Cubs against RH Kip Wells (1-4, 5.27) for the Padres The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 8:45.
