Stockton Ports News Release

MODESTO, Calif. - Modesto Nuts starter Parker French (4-5) became the first player in the California League to throw a complete-game shutout on Wednesday night, and he did so at the expense of the Stockton Ports. Stockton suffered its fifth shutout loss of the season as Modesto swept its first series of the year, beating the Ports by a final of 5-0.

Modesto opened the scoring in the first inning as they loaded the bases with nobody out versus Ports starter Brett Graves (3-7). Graves would get Shane Hoelscher to hit into a double-play, but in the process Modesto plated a run to take a 1-0 lead.

The Nuts used a catcher's interference call to add to its lead in the third. With two on and two out, it appeared that Troy Stein had hit into a fielder's choice force play to shortstop. However, Iolana Akau was called for catcher's interference, an error that kept the inning going with the bases loaded and two outs. Modesto cashed in as Drew Weeks hit a two-run single to left to give the Nuts a 3-0 advantage.

Graves was lifted after three innings and just 48 pitches. He suffered the loss after allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out three.

Casey Meisner took over in the fourth inning and would allow just one run in his three innings of work. Meisner gave up a leadoff home run to Stein in the sixth that increased the Nuts lead to 4-0. It was the only run allowed by Meisner in his three innings of relief as he allowed three hits, walked three and struck out three.

Koby Gauna took over in the seventh and gave up back-to-back singles that put runners at the corners with nobody out. Stein would hit into a double-play that allowed Wes Rogers to score from third and make it a 5-0 advantage for Modesto. It was the only run allowed by Gauna in his lone inning of work. Lou Trivino pitched the eighth and struck out the side in order.

Meanwhile, French barely gave the Ports an opportunity to get on the board. French retired eight-in-a-row after giving up a leadoff double to James Harris in the first. He pitched around a hit batter and a one-out single in the third. After allowing a two-out double to Richie Martin in the sixth, French retired another eight consecutive batters to take him one out deep into the ninth inning, when shortstop Emerson Jimenez committed a fielding error on a ball put in play by Martin. Two batters later with two outs, Joe Bennie singled to right to put runners at the corners. French would punctuate his outing and preserve the complete-game shutout with his career-high ninth strikeout of the night as he got Seth Brown swinging to end the ballgame.

For Stockton, it marked the sixth time they've been swept in a series this season. It also marked Modesto's first three-game win streak of the year. Modesto had been the only team in affiliated baseball without a three-game win streak on the season.

The Ports continue their seven-game road trip as on Thursday night as they open a four-game series in Rancho Cucamonga with the Quakes. Left-hander Matt Stalcup (2-0, 6.31 ERA) makes the start in the series opener for Stockton, opposed by Rancho Cucamonga right-hander Tommy Bergjans (2-8, 5.21 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
