
Visalia Hangs for One-Run Victory to Earn Series Win

VISALIA, CA - In a game that saw four lead changes and three ties, the Visalia Rawhide (49-28, 3-4) hung on for an 8-7 win in the rubber match against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (45-32, 3-4) at Recreation Ballpark on Wednesday night.
DH Dawel Lugo set the pace for the Rawhide offense, blasting a double, triple and a home run, driving in two runs and scoring three times in the victory.
A scoreless ballgame into the third inning, LHP Josh Taylor allowed a solo home run to RF Joey Curletta in the top of the third that gave Rancho an early 1-0 lead.
The Rawhide offense rallied in the bottom of the third to tie the ballgame at 1-1 on back-to-back two-out doubles, one by 1B Marty Herum and then the RBI double by C Michael Perez.
A second solo home run in the fourth by Rancho gave the Quakes a 2-1 lead. The second home run of the game came off the bat of Johan Mieses, his 12th of the season.
The flood gates opened up a bit against RHP Yaisel Sierra of the Quakes for the Rawhide in the bottom of the fourth. Lugo doubled and scored on an infield single by 2B Robelys Reyes to once again tie the game and then CF Chuck Taylor blasted a two-run home run to give the Rawhide a 4-2 advantage.
Taylor struck out the side in a shutdown top of the fifth after the Rawhide took the lead; it was his only one, two, three inning of the night.
Lugo followed in the fifth with a two-run home run of his own, scoring 3B Henry Castillo, who doubled in front of him for a 6-2 lead.
Taylor began the sixth but did not survive it, giving up two doubles, hitting a batter and then a two-out RBI single to 1B Matt Beaty that chased him and cut the lead to 6-5 Visalia. Taylor pitched 5.2 innings and allowed five runs (earned) on eight hits, one walk and he struck out nine without earning a decision.
Sierra ended his night pitching five innings and giving up six runs (earned) on 11 hits, one walk and he struck out four.
LHP Gabriel Moya ended the sixth inning but in the seventh with the Rawhide leading 7-5 after Herum drove in an insurance run in the in the sixth, was roughed up. 2B Tim Locastro laced a two-run double down the left field line that tied the game at 7-7 and ended the night for Moya.
LHP Gabe Speier (1-0, 2.19) pitched a scoreless inning and two-thirds to earn the win. The Rawhide snagged an 8-7 lead in the bottom of the seventh when Lugo tripled and scored on a wild pitch thrown by RHP Felipe Gonzalez (1-3, 5.93). That proved to be the game winner and RHP Bud Jeter (SV: 12) pitched a one, two, three ninth inning to earn his 12th save of the season.Â
The San Jose Giants come to town now for the first of four games over the holiday weekend. Tomorrow night RHP Ethan Elias (5-4, 5.48) makes the start for Visalia against LHP Mark Reyes (6-2, 3.84), who will pitch for the Giants. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from Visalia and it's Thirsty Thursday and 80's night presented by Party City and HITZ 104.9.
