Inland Empire 66ers News Release
Lake Elsinore, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers offense rolled to multiple-run innings in the first, third and fifth frames en route to an 8-3 win versus Lake Elsinore at The Diamond on Wednesday. The victory gave the Sixers the series win, the club's first series win against at Cal League Southern Division foe in 2016.
The Sixers opened the ballgame in fine fashion in the first when, with one out, David Fletcher singled against Lake Elsinore starter Zech Lemond (1-3). Hutton Moyer then mashed a towering two-run homer out to right field for his fourth round-tripper of the year and a 2-0 IE lead. The Storm came back immediately in the bottom of the frame to tie the game 2-2 when Josh VanMeter notched a RBI double and Michael Getty knocked him in with a single.
In the top of the third Moyer reached base on a fielder's choice and, after he stole second, Wade Wass was hit by a pitch. Taylor Ward then singled in Moyer; the second of Ward's three hits on the night. With two outs in the frame, Zach Houchins drilled a clutch two-run single to make it 5-2 Inland Empire. The Sixers struck big again in the fifth when Moyer tallied his second hit of the game. Wass followed with a single and Ward came up with his second RBI single of the night, third hit of the game to make it 6-2. With two down in the fifth Josh Delph mashed a two-run double to left-center and made it 8-2.
Lake Elsinore (36-41) did manage another run in the bottom of the seventh against Inland Empire starter Alex Klonowski (6-7) but the righty was steady for the Sixers. The Kearny, MO native went seven frames allowing seven hits while walking one and striking one out.
Angels righty Joe Smith worked the eighth in perfect fashion on a Major League Rehab assignment. He threw eight pitches (five strikes) and got two ground outs and a strikeout. Keynan Middleton walked two but struck out the side in the ninth to finish off the Storm for Inland Empire (28-49, 5-2). Fletcher, Moyer, Wass and Delph each had two hit nights along with Ward's three-hit effort.
The Sixers open a series at High Desert Thursday at 7:05 pm. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com and 1570 AM KPRO.
