Florence Y'alls News Release

(Florence, KY) - The Florence Freedom (19-22) scored three runs in the second inning and never trailed in a 5-3 victory over the Washington Wild Things (27-16) in front of 3,099 fans at UC Health Stadium on Friday night.

Rookie Michael O'Neal (1-0) made his professional debut for Florence and went five innings, scattering four hits, and only giving up two runs to earn the victory.

In the second inning Michael Wilson singled with one out. Ryan Solberg followed with a single of his own and Cole Miles drove in Wilson with a single to right off Washington starter Alex Kaminsky (1-3). On the play, Washington right fielder Stewart Ijames threw the ball out of play as he attempted to get Wilson at home. The wild throw allowed Solberg to score as well and Miles advanced to third on the play.

Zak Blair followed with a RBI single to bring home Miles and put Florence up 3-0.

Washington struck back in the fourth as Maxx Garrett hit a two-run home run to cut the Freedom lead to one. But Florence would not let Washington get any closer as Sam Eberle responded with a solo home in the fifth and Ryan Solberg delivered a RBI double in the sixth to extend the lead to 5-2.

Washington picked up a run in the ninth off Jorge Marban but the Freedom closer was able to finish off the game for his seventh save of the season.

The Freedom will look to win the series Saturday night as Casey Henn (3-2, 3.53 ERA) takes the mound. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. eastern time at UC Health Stadium. It's Military Appreciation Night presented by Jim Beam and the Freedom will be wearing special patriotic jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game to benefit the Kentucky National Guard Memorial Fund.
