Rascals Lose 4-1 at GCS
July 4, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
River City Rascals News Release
On a beautiful Fourth of July, in front of a sold-out crowd at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois, River City sent veteran Tommy Mendoza to the hill following the sweep of the Beach Bums up in Traverse City, Michigan. The Grizzlies would counter with right-hander Tyler Thompson, who took the mound in the top of the first where he allowed two two-out base-hits before striking out Taylor Ard to escape the early jam. Mendoza would then take the bump and have similar success as he retired three of four to send the game into the second scoreless at GCS.
The top of the second went much like the first, as River City had a single with two outs but again stranded the runner on a groundout by Hector Crespo. The Grizzlies then took the first lead of the ballgame on a one-out, RBI-single by designated hitter T.J. Bennett-making it 1-0 Gateway heading into the third inning.
Thompson quickly embraced the lead given unto him, by striking out two of three batters in the top of the third to keep River City scoreless through three. Mendoza would continue to hang in there however, as he would keep the Grizzlies scoreless in the bottom of the third to maintain a one-run game heading into the fourth.
After the Rascals went down one-two-three once again in the top of the fourth, Mendoza continued settling in by retiring three straight batters for the first time in the bottom of the fourth. Unfortunately, as Mendoza did his best to keep the Rascals in the ballgame, the River City offense just couldn't figure out Thompson on the mound as they went down one-two-three once again in the top of the fifth. Gateway would then double their lead on a one-out sacrifice-fly courtesy of Kale Kiser-making it 2-0 Gateway after five at GCS Ballpark.
The Rascals looked like they might get something going offensively in the top of the sixth as they got back-to-back runners aboard with two outs via hit-by-pitches, but they unfortunately couldn't capitalize on the opportunity as Taylor Ard flew-out to rightfield to end the inning.
No further runs would come across for either team until the bottom of the eighth when three Rascals errors lead to two additional runs-making it 3-0 Gateway heading into the ninth in Sauget, Illinois. Richard Barrett then came in to lock down the win in the top of the ninth allowing only one run on an RBI double by Zach Kometani-ending the game by a score of 4-1 Gateway. The win went to starter Tyler Thompson with the loss going to veteran Tommy Mendoza.
Catch game two tomorrow at GCS Ballpark as River City sends rookie Tim Koons to the mound for his second start against the Grizzlies this season. Coverage starts with the Rascals Pregame Show at 6:45pm CT!
