CornBelters can't hold lead, fall to Boomers

Normal, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, could not hold a 4-0 lead and gave up a big sixth inning as the Schaumburg Boomers captured a 6-4 win on Friday night at Boomers Stadium.

The CornBelters scored in the opening frame as Jhiomar Veras led off with a double, then scored when a throw to third on an infield single by Santiago Chirino went wide. Chirino came home on a base hit down the right field line to give the Belters a quick 2-0 advantage.

The Belters added a run in the fifth inning when Tyler Shover singled with one out, went to third on a Chirino base hit and scored with a single to right by Mike Schwartz. A two-out rally in the sixth extended the lead to 4-0 when Richard Lucas walked and scored on a double to left by Roman Hernandez.

The Boomers finally scored and in a big way in the sixth when the first four batters hit Belters starter Chris Carmain, knocking him out of the game after two scored on RBIs from Gerard Hall and Ty Nelson to cut the Normal lead to 4-2. A sacrifice bunt attempt went for a hit when the CornBelters failed to cover first to load the bases, and a sacrifice fly to right by Michael Valadez cut the margin to 4-3. Alexi Colon hit an opposite-field RBI single to left to tie the game at 4-4, and a two-out error allowed Colon to score from second to give the Boomers a 5-4 lead.

The Boomers added a run in the seventh to push the advantage to 6-4 when Hall led off with a single, went to third on two fielder's choices and scored on an RBI punch to right by Brian McConkey with two outs.

Kris Singh earned the win with one inning of relief in his professional debut. Eric Anderson (0-1) took the loss in relief. Dexter Price pitched the ninth inning for his 10th save.

The series continues Saturday at Schaumburg with a 6 p.m. first pitch as the CornBelters send Matt Packer (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to the mound against the Boomers' Hunter Ackerman (1-0, 2.58) in a battle of left-handers. Pre-game begins at 5:50 at www.normalbaseball.com . The road trip concludes with a 1 p.m. Sunday first pitch in Schaumburg. The Belters return home July 8 to begin a four-game homestand starting with the Joliet Slammers beginning with a doubleheader that night.
