Florence Y'alls News Release
FLORENCE, KY - In a game that went punch, counter-punch, the Florence Freedom were the ones left standing as they held on to win 11-9 Wednesday night over the Lake Erie Crushers.
The Freedom needed the win as they returned home after going 1-5 on their latest road trip. Every Freedom hitter recorded a base knock in a 14 hit attack.
Lake Erie's Luke Hetherington got the scoring going in the top of the second inning with his fourth home run of the season, a solo blast to make it 1-0.
Right back came the Freedom with a four spot in the bottom of the second inning. Jordan Baker and new Freedom Matt Stiffler both drove in two to make it 4-1. Stiffler finished a triple shy of the cycle.
Lake Erie scored three in the fourth including the first of Andrew Davis' two home runs to tie the game at fours.
Florence responded with a five run fourth. A throwing error by Crusher starter Josh Faiola allowed the first Freedom run to score. Erold Andrus then drove in a run with a sac fly. Ryan Basham singled home a run before Billy Mottram hit his league leading fourteenth homer with a man aboard.
The two teams traded two runs each in the fifth as the Freedom led 11-6 after five.
Melendez (4-3) lasted through the necessary five innings to pick up his team leading fourth win. Nolan Shaffer came in to pitch the sixth and walked two before giving up the second home run to Davis, a three run bomb, to cut the lead to two.
The Freedom failed to score a run their final three innings at the plate but thanks to Demetrius Banks and Jonathan Miller, they were able to hang on for the win. Miller picked up his fifth save of the season with a strikeout in the ninth.
Florence (17-14) and Lake Erie (17-14) will play game two of the series Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. from Champion Window Field. Thursday's are Kentucky Powerball Thirsty Thursdays with $1 Miller Lite and Pepsi products available throughout the night. For tickets call (859) 594-HITS or visit FlorenceFreedom.com.
