Frederick Keys News Release
The Keys (3-2, 44-31) battled back on Monday night but eventually fell to Wilmington (3-2, 35-40), 4-3, in 11 innings. Jacob Julius tied the game up with a two-out pinch hit home run to right field. The Blue Rocks, however, regained the lead in the 11th on a RBI single by C Salvador Perez and would hold on to win.
RHP Ryan Berry started for Frederick on Monday and struggled early. After retiring the first batter he faced, Berry gave up a single to SS Rey Navarro and walked 1B Eric Hosmer. RF Jamie Romak was the next Blue Rock to come to the plate. Romak drove home Navarro and Hosmer on a double to leftfield.
Trailing by a two runs, Frederick got one back in the bottom of the third. With two on and one out, 1B Joe Mahoney singled home Kyle Hudson to cut the Wilmington advantage to one after three innings.
Ryan Berry finished his outing with four scoreless innings. On the night, he allowed two runs on three hits over five innings. Berry struck out three and walked two in his seventh start with Frederick this season.
After allowing a run in the top of the sixth, Frederick got the run back in the seventh. LF Xavier Avery doubled over the head of RF Jamie Romak to bring home SS Pedro Florimon from second. However, Avery and C Phillip Britton were stranded in scoring position when the inning came to an end. The Keys trailed by one run after seven innings.
RHP Sean Gleason tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth for Frederick.
3B Buck Britton and Florimon were retired to start the bottom of the ninth as pinch hitter Jacob Julius stepped to the plate. Entering Monday, Julius was 2-for-6 with a home run in the pinch hit role. Julius drove the first pitch he saw from RHP Jairo Cuevas over the scoreboard in rightfield at Harry Grove Stadium. Julius' game tying home run was his seventh of the year which is a new career high.
After Gleason retired the side in order in the 10th, he ran into some tough luck in the 11th inning. With two outs, RF Jamie Romak hit a blooper over the head of 1B Joe Mahoney. Romak hustled into second base for a double. C Salvador Perez followed with a broken bat single into leftfield that brought home Romak from second to give Wilmington the 4-3 lead.
Trailing by a run in the bottom of the 11th, RHP Eric Basurto struck out the side to give the Blue Rocks the victory over the Keys.
Basurto improved to 1-0 for Wilmington while Sean Gleason fell to 1-4 for Frederick.
The Keys and Rocks will play the rubbermatch of the three-game set Tuesday night. RHP Oliver Drake (2-2, 3.96) will get the nod for Frederick while LHP John Lamb (3-2, 1.94) will oppose him. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
Every Tuesday night is "Guaranteed Win" Tuesday. If the Keys do not win, you can redeem your ticket for any remaining Monday-Thursday home game. For tickets call 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at www.frederickkeys.com.
