Lamb Claims Weekly Honor
June 28, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - The Carolina League announced on Monday that Wilmington Blue Rocks hurler John Lamb has been named the league's Pitcher of the Week for the period ranging from June 21-27. It marks the sixth time in 2010 a Rock has been honored by the league office. Michael Montgomery and Alex Caldera each were named CL Pitcher of the Week in 2010, with Montgomery grabbing that honor twice in a row to begin the year. Jamie Romak was recently named Player of the Week two times in a span of four weeks, with the second honor coming just seven days ago.
Lamb (3-2) enjoyed his longest outing as a Blue Rock during Wilmington's 2-0 victory over the Salem Red Sox on Thursday. The left-hander worked 6.2 scoreless frames, equaling a season-high with nine strikeouts. He surrendered only four hits, and walked just two men. Lamb retired 15 of the final 18 batters he faced.
Since arriving in Wilmington in mid-May, the 19-year-old is 3-2 with a scant 1.94 earned run average. In seven starts and 41.2 innings pitched, Lamb has fanned 48 and issued only 12 free passes.
Lamb would pace the Carolina League in ERA had he pitched enough innings to qualify. He is ranked as the seventh-best prospect in the Kansas City system by Baseball America. That same publication also deems Lamb's control as the best on the Royals farm.
He will make his next start on Tuesday, in Frederick, against the Keys. Wilmington returns home for a three-game series with the Lynchburg Hillcats on Wednesday with the first pitch of the opener slated for 7:05 p.m. For tickets call 302-888-BLUE, or visit bluerocks.com.
