Potomac Nationals News Release

(KINSTON, NC) Kinston smashed three home runs off Marcos Frias in the first three innings, weathered a late rally and leaned on their closer Cory Burns in a series-clinching 6-5 victory Monday night at Grainger Stadium.

The Nats had a great chance to score off T.J. McFarland in the first inning but could not cash in, and the K-Tribe seized the lead for good in their half of the opening frame.

For the second straight night, Lucas Montero led off with a single and scored on the next pitch when Bo Greenwell doubled him home. A single toss from Frias later, it was 3-0 after Abner Abreu rocketed a home run over the left field wall.

Chris Kersten led off the second with another big fly, and Doug Pickens capped the Indians' scoring with a two-run blast in the third.

Potomac began to make the game interesting in the fifth inning. Robbie Jacobsen led off with a single before Josh Johnson reached on a one-out fielding error. Steve Lombardozzi singled the right field to open the scoring for the Nats. Derek Norris then walked for the third time to load the bases; Mike Burgess was then hit by a pitch to make the score 6-2. It was Burgess's 50th RBI.

They tacked on three more in the seventh. Lombardozzi hit his first home run of the season to cut the lead to three. Norris singled, and Nick Moresi was hit by a pitch; both would score when Tyler Moore doubled down the right field line to make it 6-5.

The Nats rallied again in the eighth, putting two men aboard with two outs. But Kinston manager Aaron Holbert summoned Burns from the bullpen to face Norris. Norris struck out swinging to end the threat.

In the ninth, the Nats pushed the tying run to third base before Jacobsen was rung up on a controversial third strike to end the ballgame.

Potomac looks to salvage the series finale Tuesday night at 7:00 P.M. Brad Peacock faces off against Joe Mahalic; the broadcast can be heard beginning at 6:45.
