THE HILLCATS: Last night Lynchburg fell 11-8 in the series opener of a three-game series with Myrtle Beach at City Stadium...Tonight is the second game of a brief three-game homestand...
VS. MYRTLE BEACH: The Hillcats are 3-4 against the Pelicans this season...They went 12-8 against the Birds last season and were 7-4 at BB&T Coastal Field...Lynchburg's 10-3 win at Myrtle Beach last season on June 16th clinched the first half Northern Division Championship...Myrtle Beach has the all-time advantage in the series 121-106, and they are 56-56 in the Hill City...
WANNA BE STARTIN' SOMETHIN': Last night the Hillcats lost their seventh straight series opener...After starting the season 8-1 in series openers, the Hillcats are just 4-10 since and are now 12-11 overall...
WHO FIGURED? Lynchburg and Myrtle Beach combined to score 19 runs last night in the Pelicans 11-8 win last night...It was the most combined runs in a Hillcats game this season...It was the first time the Birds hit double digits since April and the right runs by the Cats was just one short of their season-high...The Hillcats and Pelicans are tied for the lowest scoring team in the Carolina League (290 runs, 3.9 runs per game)...
MOVERS AND SHAKERS: The Hillcats have made several moves since the all-star break and made another one Saturday when they added OF Felix Perez to the roster and placed RHP Nick Christiani on the Disabled List...Perez was promoted from the Rookie Dominican Reds...Lynchburg also recently promoted RHP Brad Boxberger and INF Carlos Mendez to Double-A Carolina...Boxberger, who was the Hillcats lone All-Star in the first half, was seventh in the Carolina League in ERA (3.20, fifth in strikeouts (70) and second in strikeout per nine innings ratio (10.03)...Mendez was hitting a team-leading .296 and had a team-best 73 hits...INF Alex Buchholz, INF Miguel Rojas and Christiani were placed on the Disabled List and RHP Chase Ware and INF Shane Carlson were promoted to Lynchburg from Low-A Dayton...
SECOND CHANCE: OF Felix Perez was promoted from the Rookie Dominican Reds Saturday and went 1-for-4 with a run scored in his United States debut...Last night the Cuban defector made his home debut with the Hillcats and went 2-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and a run...In 16 games in the DSL, he was batting .429 with a home run and 14 RBI...Perez was set to sign a 3.5 million dollar deal with the Yankees last year before Major League Baseball suspended him for lying abut his age (he claimed he was 20)...The Reds signed the outfielder for $550,000 to a minor league contract...
HAPPY TO BE HEALTHY: OF Kyle Day missed time at the tail end of the first half of the season with a heel injury that also limited him to designated hitter duty at times...Last night he was back in the outfield and he went 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBI, two runs scored and a walk...His triple in the seventh inning was ruled to have hit off the wall and stayed in the field of play, but upon review of the replay it appeared to have hit the netting in front of the jumbotron and bounced back into the field of play...In his last three games he is 5-for-12 (.417) with a double, a triple, a home run, seven RBI and three runs scored...His grand slam was the first of his career, the first by a Hillcat this season and the first against Kinston this year as well...
WISE ONCE AGAIN: OF Josh Fellhauer smacked his fifth home run of the season last night in the bottom of the ninth inning...It was his first home run in 134 at-bats...The last home run the lefty hit was on May 18th against Wilmington...After homering four times in his first 37 games, he has hit one in his last 33...In his last seven games he is 10-for-29 (.345) with a double, a home run, two RBI and five runs scored...This after he started the month 9-for-54 (.167)...In the second half Fellhauer has disposed of his Miley Cyrus walk-up song Party in the USA...He is now sauntering to the plate to Wise Man by Slightly Stoopid...
SHOWING NO WARE: RHP Chase Ware made his High-A debut Saturday night with Lynchburg and did not allow a run in an inning and 1/3 of work to pick-up the hold...With Low-A Dayton the right-hander was 3-1 with a 1.84 ERA and seven saves in 21 games in relief...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Julio Teheran was signed by the Braves in 2007 out of Columbia...He made his professional debut with Rookie Danville in 2008 and went 1-2 with a 6.60 ERA in six starts...Last season he returned to Danville and had a 2-1 mark with a 2.68 ERA in seven starts before earning a promotion to full season Low-A Rome...He finished the season in the South Atlantic League going 1-3 with a 4.78 ERA in seven starts...This year he began back in Rome and was 2-2 with a 1.14 ERA in seven starts before coming up to Myrtle Beach...Teheran has made six starts with the Pelicans and has gone 3-1 with a 1.38 ERA...The 19-year old is ranked as the third best prospect in the Braves system according to Baseball America and was named to the Carolina League Mid-Season All-Star game...In his one start against Lynchburg he did not allow a run in six innings of work and earned the win on the Grand Strand...
