Francis Makes Easy Work of RailRiders, 3-1

August 29, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

The Bisons got home runs from Dalton Pompey and Matt Hague, but Saturday night's 3-1 victory over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre at Coca-Cola Field was all about Jeff Francis.

The veteran southpaw absolutely dominated the RailRiders' lineup, allowing just one run on two hits for his sixth win of the season. He faced just one over the minimum and needed only 80 pitches to cruise through eight innings of work.

Francis allowed just two baserunners all night. The first, a second inning leadoff single from Kyle Roller, was erased by an inning-ending doubleplay two batters later. In the third, rehabbing outfielder Dustin Ackley hit a breaking ball over the wall in right center for the RailRiders only run of the game.

That was it. Francis did not issue a walk and struck out six batters. He retired the final 13 batters he faced after the Ackley home run. Seven of those outs were on the ground.

Francis' dominance wasn't just on the scoreboard. It was also on the clock. At one hour and 49 minutes, Saturday's contest was just seven minutes longer than the shortest nine-inning game in the Bisons modern era; a 2-1 loss to Louisville on August 5, 1993.

The Bisons used the longball to support Francis' tremendous start. Dalton Pompey hit a solo home run in the third inning to get Buffalo on the scoreboard. Matt Hague hit a two-run moon shot down the left-field line in the sixth inning to give the Herd the lead.

Hague now has 88 RBI on the season, tops in the International League.

BISONS NOTES:

The Bisons are now one-game under the .500-mark at 67-68...Ryan Tepera pitched the ninth inning for his third save of the season...Buffalo is 8-5 against the IL North division-leading RailRiders, needing just one more win to claim the season-series victory.
