Charlotte Knights News Release
(Durham, NC) - Scott Carroll delivered six strong innings and the Charlotte Knights scored four runs in the third inning on way to a 9-3 victory over their in-state rival Durham Bulls on Saturday night. The victory brings Charlotte within 3.5 games of the Norfolk Tides for the International League South Division lead.
Carroll (7-4, 3.40) allowed only two hits and one run over six innings pitched to earn his second consecutive victory. The 30-year-old also recorded a season-high five strikeouts in the outing.
Leury Garcia lead the Knights offensive attack with three of the team's eight hits, including a three-RBI triple in the third inning that gave Charlotte their first lead of the game. Garcia also scored in the frame on a Jason Coats RBI-ground-out to complete the four-run inning and give the Knights a 4-1 advantage.
Dayan Viciedo continued his hot-hitting by adding a pair of singles and four runs batted in. The Cuban native put Charlotte ahead 6-1 with a two-run single in the fifth inning, and then added a pair of insurance runs with a second two-run single in the ninth frame. Since his return to Charlotte, Viciedo is batting a strong .314 with five home runs and 16 RBIs.
Onelki Garcia relieved Carroll in the seventh inning and tossed two solid innings of one-run ball. The left-hander allowed two hits and two walks in the outing. J.B. Wendelken took the mound in the ninth inning and allowed one run before recording the final three outs to seal the Knights 9-3 victory.
With the Charlotte victory and a loss by the Norfolk Tides, the Knights pulled within 3.5 games of the division lead with nine games remaining. The Knights and Bulls will conclude their four-game series on Sunday before Charlotte heads to Norfolk to take on the Tides for a two-game set.
Sunday's matchup will feature International League ERA and strikeout-leader Erik Johnson as he looks to earn his 12th victory of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. from Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
