Fourth Game in Five Nights Proves to be too Much for Road-Weary Grrrowl

COLUMBIA, SC – The Greenville Grrrowl suffered a 6-2 loss to the Columbia Inferno in Game 1 of their Southeast Division Semi-Final Series on Wednesday at the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia.

The Inferno opened the scoring when Robin Carruthers beat Grrrowl goaltender DAMIAN RHODES at 6:34 of the first period to give Columbia a 1-0 lead. MATT DEMARSKI tied the game at 1-1 with a powerplay goal at 13:53, but 64 seconds later Darrell Hay took a slapshot on RHODES and Tim Smith buried the rebound giving the Inferno a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.

The Inferno scored a pair of goals 25 seconds apart when Corey Hessler made it 3-1 at 2:01 of the second period, and Denis Martynyuk gave the Inferno a 4-1 lead at 2:26. Shawn Wansborough tallied a powerplay marker 13:58, and the top-seeded team in the ECHL Southern Conference too a 5-1 lead into the second intermission. The teams then exchanged goals in the third period, and PETER FLACHE scored his third playoff goal in two games in a losing effort for Greenville.

Game 2 of this best-of-five series is scheduled for Friday night, in Columbia, at 7:05 PM (Newsradio 1330 & 950, WORD).

Games 3 & 4 (if necessary) will be played at the BI-LO Center next Monday and Tuesday (4/7 & 4/8) nights at 7:05 PM. Individual tickets for the first round games on the 7th and 8th are on sale now. Individual tickets are $1 more than regular season prices...$22, $17, $15, $11, $7.
