Winston-Salem Dash News Release

FREDERICK, MD (JUNE 24, 2010) - Winston-Salem started the second half of the season the way it did the first: scoring seven runs and getting a road win with a 7-4 triumph over the Frederick Keys at Harry Grove Stadium. Kenny Williams, Jr.'s two-run double in the seventh inning turned a one-run deficit into a one-run lead, as the Dash took the first of the three-game series.

The game was a meeting of the two first half champions. Winston-Salem (1-0, 44-27) captured the Southern Division while Frederick (0-1, 41-30) won the Northern.

The Dash got off to a quick start when Brandon Short led off the game with a home run for the second straight contest. He also homered to begin Sunday's loss at Wilmington. Justin Greene hit a two-run shot in the third inning off Oliver Drake to give Winston a 3-0 lead.

The Keys picked up their first run in the bottom of the third with a bases-loaded groundout by Xavier Avery and tied the game an inning later. The first two batters singled off Nate Jones and both moved into scoring position on a fielder's choice. Bobby Stevens brought home Ronnie Welty with a sacrifice fly, while major league rehabber Felix Pie leveled the contest with an RBI single.

Frederick took the lead in the sixth without benefit of a hit or a ball getting past the pitcher. After Santos Rodriguez struck out the leadoff man, Stevens walked. On the first pitch to Brian Ward, Stevens broke for second base and made it to third on a wild pitch. Orlando Gomez then called for a suicide squeeze, which worked to perfection. Stevens came home as Ward bunted a ball back to Rodriguez, whose only play was to first base. He retired Ward, but Stevens scored to put the Keys ahead 4-3. Rodriguez struck out Pie to end the inning.

Winston-Salem responded by staging a relentless two-out rally in the top of the seventh. After new pitcher Sean Gleason (1-3) retired the first two batters, Jon Gilmore and Seth Loman singled while Logan Johnson reached on an error to load the bases. Williams, who had struck out with the bases loaded earlier in the ballgame, bounced an 0-2 pitch through the right side for a base hit, scoring Gilmore and Loman and giving the Dash a 5-4 lead.

After a walk to Sierra loaded the bases again, Drew Garcia lined a ball to left-center field for another two-run hit. Johnson and Williams scored to complete the four-run inning.

The Dash got shutout relief pitching the rest of the way, but a freak injury tempered spirits with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Dan Remenowsky appeared to hurt his right knee while covering first base on a groundout by Pie. Remenowsky fell down after tagging the bag with his right foot, but was able to stand up and he attempted a warm-up pitch. The injury caused Remenowsky's knee to buckle and he fell down again on the mound as he unsuccessfully tried to deliver the ball homeward. He was then helped off the field and to the clubhouse by the medical support staff.

Tyson Corley came in as the injury replacement and walked the first two batters to bring the tying run to the plate. After throwing his first 11 pitches for balls, he eventually struck out Joe Mahoney to end the game.

Rodriguez (1-0) picked up his first win with two innings of relief, but saw his personal consecutive scoreless innings streak end at 14. Gleason took the loss after giving up four runs on five hits and a walk in one inning.

Notes: All of Short's ten home runs this year have been solo shots... He extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a 2 for 5 night... Logan Johnson and Eduardo Escobar were the only Dash players without a hit, going a combined 0 for 8... Winston's pitchers struck out 15 batters, the most the team has struck out in a nine-inning game all season; the Dash struck out a season-high 23 in its 20-inning game against Myrtle Beach... The Dash won its first game of the season by a 7-1 score at Kinston...

Winston goes for the series victory on Friday when LHP Charlie Leesman (7-3, 5.22) opposes LHP Rick Zagone (4-6, 3.24) in a 7 p.m. start. The audio pre-game show begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.

The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on Sunday, June 27 to start a six-game home stand with a series against the Salem Red Sox.
