June 24, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

The Keys (0-1, 41-30) fell to the Winston-Salem Dash (1-0, 44-27), 7-4, in the first game of the second-half of the season on Thursday night. Frederick trailed by three runs heading into the bottom of the third but battled back to take the lead, 4-3, after six innings. However, the Dash scored four in the top half of seventh and went on to win by three runs.

RHP Oliver Drake started the night for Frederick and the first batter he faced was RF Brandon Short. It looked as if Drake got Short to pop out in foul territory for the first out of the inning but 3B Billy Rowell misplayed the ball and it fell harmlessly in foul territory. Rowell was charged with an error. Just a couple pitches later, Short connected for his 10th homerun of the season to give Winston-Salem a lead before Frederick even came to the plate.

Major League rehabber, Felix Pie, led off the game for Frederick and in his first at bat, RHP Nate Jones forced Pie to ground out to second base. Jones retired the side in order in the first.

After a double by 2B Drew Garcia led off the top of the third, CF Justin Greene hit a two-run blast off Drake to give Winston-Salem a three-run advantage.

3B Bobby Stevens came around to score on a fielder's choice by CF Xavier Avery in the bottom of the third to put the Keys on the board. After three, Frederick trailed by two runs.

Frederick tied up the game in the fourth. Stevens drove home RF Ronnie Welty on a sac fly and then Pie brought home 2B Miguel Abreu on a RBI single to centerfield. Pie's RBI tied the game at three.

Following a scoreless fifth and top of the sixth, the Keys scored a run in the bottom of the sixth without a hit. With one out, LHP Santos Rodriguez walked Stevens. With C Brian Ward at the plate, Stevens stole second and then advanced to third on the same play following a passed ball by C Luis Sierra. With Stevens at third, Manager Orlando Gomez put called for a suicide squeeze. Ward and Stevens executed it to perfection as Stevens scored to give the Keys their first lead of the night.

The Frederick lead would not last very long. RHP Sean Gleason allowed four runs on five hits in the seventh as the Dash took a 7-4 lead.

Winston-Salem did not allow run in the eighth or ninth as they went on to win by three runs. Santos Rodriguez improved to 1-0 while Sean Gleason fell to 1-3 on the year.

Frederick will try to bounce back on Friday night as they send LHP Rick Zagone (4-6, 3.24) to the hill. Winston-Salem will toss LHP Charles Leesman (7-3, 5.22). First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. on YMCA night at Harry Grove Stadium.
