Wilmington, DE (June 24, 2010) - After three days off for the All-Star Break, Salem's offense got off to a slow start in the second half. Three Blue Rock pitchers combined to toss a five-hit shutout and blanked the Red Sox 2-0 on Thursday evening at Frawley Stadium. John Lamb recorded his sixth quality start in seven Carolina League outings for Wilmington, improving his record to 3-2 with six and two-thirds scoreless innings. Salem starter Caleb Clay also qualified for a quality outing, allowing two runs on seven hits over six and two-thirds, yet received zero run support and fell to 2-5 on the season.
Salem only placed two runners past second base in the entire game, with Peter Hissey being stranded at third in the first inning and Tim Federowicz being thrown out at the plate for the final out in the second. Of Salem's five hits, four were singles, with Ryan Dent's second inning double serving as the lone extra-base knock. No one had multiple hits for the Red Sox.
Wilmington plated single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, with Patrick Norris reaching on a two-out RBI infield single to break the scoreless draw. An inning later, Eric Hosmer belted a solo homer off Clay to make it 2-0. Hosmer finished 2-4 for Wilmington, while Jamar Walton went 3-3 and connected on three of the Blue Rocks' seven hits.
After Lamb tossed six and two thirds, Harold Mozingo recorded the final out in the seventh and Henry Barrera tossed the final two frames to pick up his first save.
Cesar Cabral threw the final inning and a third for Salem and did not allow a hit, yet the Red Sox lack of offense, particularly in clutch situations, held the Sox back. Salem finished 0-5 with runners in scoring position and the Sox are now 0-15 with runners in scoring position in their last two games.
The three-game series with Wilmington continues on Friday night, with Miguel Gonzalez starting against Tim Melville. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 at Frawley Stadium.
