Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - A night after the Pelicans nearly no-hit the Potomac Nationals, the P-Nats broke out for 11 hits and held the Birds to only three as they rolled to a 7-2 win in the rubber game of a three-game set at BB&T Coastal Field on Sunday. Myrtle Beach made four errors, three committed by Leury Garcia in a two-inning span, as they dropped their third straight series.
Potomac got on the board first with a pair of runs in the second off Birds starter Wilfredo Boscan on a Sandy Leon sacrifice fly and a Cutter Dykstra RBI single. Myrtle Beach answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning when Ryan Strausborger doubled and came around on a pair of groundouts by Zach Zaneski and Travis Adair. Santiago Chrino tripled in the frame, but starter Evan Bronson stranded him at third as he represented the tying run.
The two teams exchanged leadoff homers in the fourth, with Leon going deep in the top half for the P-Nats and Jared Prince knocking his seventh home run of the season for Myrtle Beach.
After the Pelicans' pitching dominance on Saturday, the Nationals turned the tables on Sunday as three pitchers combined to retire the last 18 batters after the Prince homer. Bronson (3-3) held Myrtle Beach to two runs on three hits in five innings of work. Marcos Frias went six up, six down in the sixth and seventh and Josh Smoker did the same in the eighth and ninth.
Potomac, who came into the series with a league-worst 4.17 ERA as a staff, held the Pelicans to six runs and 14 hits in the three-game series.
The Nationals took advantage of the three errors at short by Garcia, scoring two unearned runs against Boscan (4-9) in the seventh and two unearned runs against reliever Trevor Hurley in the eighth.
The loss hands the Pelicans a series loss for the third straight time. They lost two out of three in Kinston earlier this week and last weekend Winston-Salem swept a rain-shortened two-game series in Myrtle Beach. The Birds have lost six of their last eight and ten of their last 15.
The Nationals head home to host the Salem Red Sox for three games starting Monday. The Pelicans begin a three-game series against the Frederick Keys on Monday in a matchup of the Carolina League's first-half division champions.
Barret Loux (8-5, 3.57) goes for the Birds against southpaw Nick Haughian (8-5, 3.44). First pitch at BB&T Coastal Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tickets for all Pelicans home games, including the postseason, are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
