Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AUGUST 7, 2011) - Ian Gac belted two home runs in consecutive innings, and Andy Wilkins had a three-run shot as well in Winston-Salem's 8-0 win over Frederick on Sunday evening at BB&T Ballpark. The Dash took two of three from the Keys and won their fifth consecutive series, extending their lead in the Carolina League Southern Division to two games over Kinston.
Every game during the three-game series followed the same script. The winning team got out to a quick start in all three games, and on Sunday it was Winston-Salem (24-17, 56-55). Gac mashed his first home run of the ballgame in the second against Keys starter Ryohei Tanaka.
In the third, the Dash opened things up. With one out, Tyler Saladino and Jared Mitchell drew successive walks before Wilkins blasted a home run beyond the right field fence to score three runs. Gac followed with his second long ball of the game to put Winston up 5-0.
The home run by Gac was his 30th of the season and moved him into a tie for the lead in home runs in all of minor league baseball. Gac is the active leader.
Winston-Salem scored again in the fourth inning when Daniel Wagner singled and scored on Saladino's triple off the center field wall.
Wilkins singled to lead off the fifth inning, and scored on a fielding error by left fielder Kipp Schutz after Gac's double. Nick Ciolli later followed with a run-scoring double with two outs to put the Dash up by the eventual final margin, 8-0.
The Keys (26-16, 67-44) were unable to get anything going against Dash starter Cameron Bayne (11-4), who threw seven scoreless innings and gave up five hits. He picked up his 11th win of the season, which moves him into a tie for the Carolina League lead in the category. The quality start for Bayne also moves him into a tie for the team lead with Joe Serafin. Tanaka (7-4) was hit with the loss after allowing eight runs on 11 hits in 4.2 innings.
The shutout victory was the third straight win in shutout fashion for the Dash. The winning team in the series outscored the loser by a total score of 30-0, as all games against Frederick ended in a shutout.
Winston-Salem heads on the road for seven games against Wilmington and Frederick starting Monday night at 7:05 at Wilmington's Frawley Stadium. RHP Jake Petricka (2-5, 4.63) is scheduled to throw for Winston-Salem opposite LHP Justin Marks (6-8, 4.66). The Dash return home to BB&T Ballpark on Monday, August 15 at 6 p.m. when the Lynchburg Hillcats come to town for four games in three days.
