Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Kinston, NC (August 7, 2011) - Salem scored four runs in the top of the first inning in game one and later found itself four outs away from sweeping Sunday's double-dip over Kinston, but Adam Abraham's two-out, two-RBI single in the last of the sixth in game two surged the Indians to the triumph in the nightcap. The Red Sox prevailed 5-1 in the opener behind the early offense and five strong innings from Anthony Ranaudo, while the Indians snuck past Salem 2-1 in the series finale, earning a 2-1 series victory in the process.
The Sox batted around against Indians starter Brett Brach in the first frame of the day, scoring four times on four hits, two walks, and two Kinston errors. Derrik Gibson walked and scored on Peter Hissey's bunt single and ensuing throwing error. Hissey moved to third on Kolbrin Vitek's single before scoring on an errant pick-off attempt at first. Miles Head's RBI double, the first of his four hits in the two-bill, made it 3-0 in the first, while Jorge Padron's RBI single plated Head to give the Sox their 4-0 edge.
The Indians had baserunners in every single inning, but Ranaudo induced three double-plays and made a number of clutch pitches to allow just one run on five hits and four walks. Tyler Cannon's RBI single in the last of the fourth put the K-Tribe on the board, but the Sox answered with a single run in the top of the fifth via a bases loaded walk drawn by Vladimir Frias. Up 5-1, Will Latimer tossed two scoreless innings to close it out, pitching around three walks and two hits to help Salem earn its 50th victory of the season.
In game two, there were baserunners abound through the first four innings, but no runs amounted from the numerous threats, with Salem stranding six and Kinston leaving eight in the first four innings alone. Salem starter Pete Ruiz did not allow a hit in his time on the hill, but struggled to throw strikes, walking six Indians in two and a third innings before he was removed.
The Sox broke through in the top of the fifth, with Head's RBI single driving in Gibson against Kinston reliever Chris Jones. Up 1-0 into the last of the sixth, Tom Ebert encountered turbulence after surrendering a leadoff single to Justin Toole. He alternated out, walk, out, walk through the next four batters, loading the bases for Abraham. After falling behind in the count 0-2, Abraham slapped a 3-2 delivery into right-field for a two-run, game-changing single. The Sox placed the tying run aboard in the top of the seventh, but Preston Guilmet responded to Gibson's leadoff single by setting down three straight to earn his 29th save, preserving the 2-1 Indians triumph.
Salem's road trip continues on Monday evening in Potomac with a three-game set against the Nationals. Chris Hernandez takes the mound in the opener opposite Nationals righthander Paul Demny, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05.
