Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
LHP Evan Bronson (2-3, 3.68) at RHP Wilfredo Boscan (4-8, 4.18)
ABOUT LAST NIGHT...: The Pelicans nearly made history last night, but they fell two outs shy of pitching the first nine-inning no-hitter in franchise history in a 3-0 win over Potomac. Miguel De Los Santos walked the first two batters he faced, then retired the next 21 batters, ten on strikes, before leaving after seven innings due to a high pitch count. Zach Osborne came in and worked a 1-2-3 eighth and got the first out in the ninth before Francisco Soriano laced a clean line-drive single to right to break up the no-hit bid. The next batter, Jose Lozada, lined into a game-ending double play as the Birds had to settle for a one-hitter. At the plate, Jonathan Roof, Vinny DiFazio and Ryan Strausborger each knocked in one run to back up the pitching dominance.
SOME TURNAROUND: Miguel De Los Santos seemed headed for a repeat performance of his miserable outing from last Saturday, in which he walked four, including two with the bases loaded, as he was knocked out in the second inning in a loss to Winston-Salem. The lefty issued two free passes to the first two batters he faced last night, but he recovered to retire the side in order after that and escape the jam. After the pair of walks, De Los Santos retired 21 in a row to end his night.
NEAR NO-NO: Miguel De Los Santos and Zach Osborne teamed up to put the Pelicans two outs away from the franchise's second no-hitter before Francisco Soriano's one-out single in the ninth broke it up. The only no-no the Pelicans have ever tossed was on July 23, 2000 against Frederick, when Tim Spooneybarger worked a hitless first inning before Christian Parra closed it out with six hitless frames.
SO CLOSE: Last night the Potomac Nationals were almost no-hit for the second time in the calendar year. The last no-hitter in the Carolina League was on the season's penultimate day of the regular season, September 5, when the Kinston Indians pitched a ten-inning combined no-no at Potomac. Marty Popham pitched the first seven innings, Chris Jones worked the eighth and ninth and after Doug Pickens' RBI single broke a scoreless tie in the top of the tenth, Cory Burns set the P-Nats down 1-2-3 to close out the masterpiece.
FLASHING THE LEATHER: Like in any no-hit bid, the Pelicans made several spectacular defensive plays behind De Los Santos and Osborne. Roof took a hit away from Cutter Dykstra in the second with a diving stop at second and Santiago Chirino made a great stab at third base to rob Francisco Soriano of a hit in the sixth inning. Prince made the play of the night, a diving catch on a Destin Hood fly to right for the first out of the seventh. Behind Osborne in the eighth, Jared Bolden ranged to his right at first base for the second out of the eighth.
