December 15, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
Spokane, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs are proud to announce that prospect Luka Shcherbyna has signed a WHL Standard Player Agreement. From Vancouver, B.C., Shcherbyna was selected by the Chiefs in the second round (41st overall) of the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft.
"We are thrilled to welcome Luka and his family to the Chiefs organization," said General Manager Scott Carter. "We were very excited to select him in last week's draft and now to get him on board officially."
The fleet-footed 5-foot-10 forward has put up very good numbers this season for St. George's School of the CSSHL. In 16 games with the U17 prep squad, he has 16 goals and 9 assists for 25 points. He has also played up with the U18 team and maintained strong production, scoring a goal and four assists in four games.
Spokane's Assistant General Manager Jim Hammett noted Shcherbyna's speed on draft day, rating him "in the top end in the draft in terms of pure speed," with an ability to finish around the net and play with pace all over the ice.
Signed WHL prospects from the 2021 draft are eligible to join their respective clubs as Affiliated Players for up to five games while their home club is still in season. Shcherbyna will first be eligible to play in Spokane full-time beginning with the 2022-23 season.
