San Antonio Rampage News Release
SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Rampage have announced that A.J. Greer has been named the team's winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year Award for his outstanding contributions to the San Antonio community during the 2016-17 season.
With a personal connection to childhood cancer, Greer has placed an emphasis on visiting children and families who are battling or have battled various kinds and stages of cancer at local hospitals. From scheduling weekly visits during his off-days to providing game tickets and locker room tours for his buddies and their families, Greer has proven that his passion for raising awareness of childhood cancer is a top priority. Outside of visiting the local children's hospitals in San Antonio, Greer also shared his passion throughout the Rampage's Face Off Against Kids Cancer program. Greer went above and beyond what is asked of the team throughout their monthly visits both inside and outside of the AT&T Center.
Greer also emceed and participated in a local event benefiting the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a national organization focused on funding promising research to find cures for childhood cancer. During the event, Greer pledged $1,000 to shave his head for children's cancer research, while helping the St. Baldrick's Foundation raise more than $88,000 dollars that day. He also took time after returning from the 2017 AHL All-Star Classic to interact with San Antonio natives currently battling or who have survived breast cancer prior to the team's Pink in the Rink Game.
Greer has also volunteered his time to assist SS&E nonprofit Silver & Black Give Back through the Team Up Challenge. This included hosting an ice-skating event for guests of Any Baby Can-San Antonio, an organization that assists families with children with special needs.
Greer is now one of 30 finalists for the AHL's 2016-17 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced by the American Hockey League at a later date.
