El Paso Diablos News Release
El Paso, TX - El Paso fell for the third straight game to the Fort Worth Cats losing 11-6 on Wednesday night at Cohen Stadium. Fort Worth has felt very comfortable at Cohen Stadium this season as they improve their record to 6-0 on El Paso's home turf. They also hand El Paso their sixth straight loss.
El Paso would be put in a 6-0 hole as the Cats took the lead for the third straight game. They scored single runs in the third and fourth before adding four in the fifth. El Paso came back and cut the lead all the way down to one scoring one in the fifth and four in the sixth. In the sixth the Diablos got two big clutch hits with two outs from Mike Provencher who brought in two with a single and then Jonathan Reynoso who also brought in two with a double. The Cats came right back though. They scored two in the seventh on a Jeremy Sauceda home run and added three more in the eighth to push their lead back up to six. El Paso would get their final run in the ninth inning on a Kyle Nichols single.
The Diablos offense was handcuffed for much of the night by the Cats' pitching staff as they had just nine hits only two of which went for extra base. El Paso was led by Mike Provencher who went 2-4 and drove in three out of the Diablos six runs. Arnoldo Ponce chipped in going 3-5 while Kyle Nichols went 2-5 with a double and one RBI. Hector Bernal finished the night 0-4 with a walk as his hit streak will end at 19 straight games.
Amad Stephens could not get out of the fifth inning as he allowed six runs, only four of which were earned on eight hits. It is three out of four games that a Diablos starter has failed to pitch five innings. The game also featured El Paso native Jesse Estrada making his debut out of the bull pen. He pitched over two innings and allowed two runs on four hits. Dwayne Pollok (8-5) picked up the win which is also his first in four chances against El Paso this season. He was able to cruise through five innings before he got into trouble in the sixth when he departed. He ended up allowing four earned runs on five hits and five walks.
The Diablos will try to stave off a sweep at the hands of the Cats on Thursday night. They will hand the ball to Shaun Ellis (8-2, 4.73). The Cats will counter will Jason Fernandez (4-6, 3.71). It is a Thirsty Thursday and that means one dollar beers until the seventh inning. Game time is set for 7:05. Fans can listen in by online at www.diablos.com.
