Pensacola skids past Grand Prairie

Grand Prairie, TX. Pensacola made it two straight over the AirHogs Tuesday night with an 11-8 victory at QuikTrip Park. The Pelicans kept a firm grip on first place in the South Division by scoring seven runs in the first inning and holding off the AirHogs down the stretch.

Pensacola, which has won six straight over Grand Prairie, leads the second half standings by five and a half games over Shreveport-Bossier. The AirHogs, who had won three in a row have now lost two straight.

David Espinosa collected two more hits in the game including a two-run single in the first and is now just three hits away from the 100-hit plateau. And Jason Stokes belted another home run for the AirHogs, a solo shot to deep left center.

The first inning set the tone as the Pelicans jumped on Grand Prairie starter Ryan Riddle for seven runs on six hits. Pensacola sent 12 men to the plate but none of the six hits were hard hit.

The Pelicans had two infield hits and three bloop hits to the outfield, including a bloop double down the right field line by Chris Chiarappa with the bases loaded. All three runs scored.

The bottom of the first inning was just as long for Pensacola starter Bryan Rembisz. The AirHogs scored five runs on five hits and took advantage of two Pelican errors.

Espinosa had two RBI and Antoin Gray, Steve Carrillo and Devan Braden each had a RBI in the inning. In all, the first inning took 45 minutes and there were 12 runs on 11 hits and two errors.

The Pelicans added another run in the top of the second and the scored stayed 8-5 until the bottom of the fifth. Stokes led off the inning with a solo home run, his second in as many games, and Daniel Berg greeted Pensacola reliever Ron Hill with a two-run single to pull the AirHogs even at 8-8.

Hill would eventually get the win as the Pelicans took a 9-8 lead in sixth by scoring on a passed ball. The Pelicans then added a couple of insurance runs in the top of the ninth on Francisco Leandro's two-run single.

The AirHogs versus Pensacola Pelicans continues Wednesday night.
