Wichita Wingnuts News Release
SHREVEPORT, LA- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Shreveport-Bossier Captains 9-7 at Fairgrounds Field on Wednesday night.
Down 7-6 in the top of the ninth, Ryan Patterson led off with a single against former Major Leaguer Hector Carrasco. Second baseman Joe Urtuzuastegui grabbed a groundball from Carlos Rivera on a potential double play ball, but his throw was dropped at the second base bag by shortstop Jeff Hulett.
With the tying and go-ahead runs on base, Michael Bell laid down a bunt towards the mound that Carrasco fielded cleanly. Third baseman Glenn Wilson however, could not handle Carrasco's throw which went into foul territory and scored Patterson with the tying run. Cesar Suarez dropped down another bunt which moved runners to second and third with one out. Jorge Delgado pulled the first pitch he saw from Carrasco through the left side of a drawn in infield to plate two more runs and give the Wingnuts a 9-7 lead.
Cephas Howard allowed a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth but retired the next three hitters to finish off the win. Howard allowed a two-out, two-run single to Jovanny Rosario in the bottom of the eighth that gave the Captains a brief 7-6 lead.
The Wingnuts scored early and often against all-star righty Osvaldo Rodriguez. Bell hit a two-run single with the bases loaded to put Wichita on the board at 2-0. Delgado added a two-run hit of his own with the bases full, while Steve Pearson capped off the inning with a two-out, RBI single.
The Captains tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of three Wingnuts errors. Rosario drove in the tying runs with a base hit through the left side against Wingnuts' starter Gabe Medina.
The Wingnuts took their second lead of the night in the top of the sixth when Jorge Cortes doubled home Pearson to make it 6-5.
Medina took a no-decision, allowing one earned run in six innings. Medina tied a Wingnuts' single-game record with 10 strikeouts while walking one. Rodriguez also took a no-decision, allowing six runs, four earned, in 5.1 IP. Carrasco took the loss, while Howard earned the win for the Wingnuts. Delgado finished the night 3 for 5 with four RBI. Patterson's ninth inning single extended his hitting streak to 13 games in a row. The comeback marked the fourth time in the second half the Wingnuts have won when trailing after eight innings.
The Wingnuts have Thursday off and then continue their 13-game road trip on Friday when they open a three-game series at Sioux City. First pitch at Lewis and Clark Park is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. All the action can be heard live on Oldies 93.5 KWME and worldwide at www.kleyam.com following the completion of the 5:00 p.m. game of the BaseballSavings.com 76th annual NBC World Series.
