Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
EASTLAKE, Ohio -- The TinCaps topped the Lake County Captains (Cleveland Guardians affiliate), 3-2, in a rain-shortened game on Sunday night at Classic Auto Group Park. The contest was called at the end of the sixth inning due to rain in the Cleveland area.
Left-hander Robby Snelling (No. 4 Padres prospect) made his High-A debut with Fort Wayne (5-3, 37-37). The 19-year-old allowed three consecutive hits to begin the bottom of the first inning as two runs scored, but from there, he kept Lake County (2-6, 33-40) off the board. Snelling earned the victory with five innings of work, striking out four, including three batters in a row in the third inning. Overall, he threw 92 pitches (52 strikes), yielding a total of four hits and two walks.
Meanwhile, Snelling was gifted a 1-0 lead as shortstop Jackson Merrill (No. 1 Padres prospect) hit his 10th home run of the season to lead off the game. Merrill hit a pair of homers here Friday as well and has launched four of his shots in 11 games at home run-friendly Classic Auto Group Park.
The TinCaps rallied with two runs in the fifth. Merrill singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a double hit by center fielder Jakob Marsee (No. 22 Padres prospect). Second baseman Lukas Dunn followed with an RBI single to plate Marsee for the lead.
Alan Mundo followed Snelling with a scoreless sixth before the tarp came on and the game was called after a 37-minute delay.
Monday marks the finale of Fort Wayne's 12-game road trip. The TinCaps are 7-4 so far, as they've won three of the first five in this set.
On Monday, Fort Wayne will have a chance to move above .500 overall for the first time since entering May 3 of last year at 11-10. The last time the TinCaps had an overall winning record this late in the season was when their record stood at 43-42 entering July 7, 2018.
Next Game: Monday, July 3 @ Lake County (4 p.m.)
TinCaps Probable Starter: RHP Victor Lizarraga (No. 7 Padres prospect)
Captains Probable Starter: RHP Aaron Davenport
